8' x 10'3" Afghan Zigler Rug | Black Brown All Over Floral | Natural Wool, Never Used

This 8' x 10'3" Zigler is a brand new Afghan weave in natural handspun wool, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation and shipped with a certificate of authenticity. From standing height the field reads almost black, then opens into a deep espresso brown the moment light crosses the pile, and the whole surface is filled edge to edge with blossoms in salmon, tan, sage and rust. A wide ivory border calms all of that pattern down and keeps the rug easy to live with. As a handmade Oriental rug it sits in the practical 8 x 10 size class, so it will take a full sofa and 2 chairs, or a dining table with all the chairs pulled back, and the extra 3 inches of length keep the borders clear of furniture legs.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The drawing is a true all over floral lattice built from thin curved vines that cross and re-cross the field, hanging large 8 petal rosettes, lotus palmettes, split leaves and small tulip buds off every junction. Look closely at the field corners and you will find serrated leaf forms curled into a paisley-like hook, a detail the weaver repeats 4 times to close the pattern. The main border is the part that separates a good Zigler from an ordinary one: an ivory ground carrying black arabesque scrolls that swing from one floral bouquet to the next, with each bouquet drawn slightly differently. Two narrow guard stripes, striped in salmon with small black cross rosettes, fence the border on both sides, and the corners resolve cleanly rather than running off the edge. The pile is cut at a medium height, which lets the fine vine work stay legible while keeping the surface soft underfoot.

A Black Brown Field with Salmon, Sage and Rust

The ground color is the reason to buy this one. It is a very dark chocolate brown that photographs as black in the overhead shot and shows its brown warmth in the angled and macro images, and because the wool is handspun the shade breathes slightly from one pass to the next instead of lying flat. Against it the flowers are quiet rather than bright: dusty salmon pink, pale peach, oatmeal cream, olive and sage green, soft antique gold, and small strikes of rust and wine red in the flower centers. The vines are a muted khaki gold, which is what keeps the field from looking busy. The border ground is a pale sand beige that warms to blush at the guard stripes, the 4 sides finished with a dark brown selvage and natural ivory fringe. In practical terms this is a dark rug that lightens a room rather than shrinking it, and it hides everyday traffic far better than an ivory field would.

Afghan Weaving and the Zigler Tradition

Zigler weaving, sold in the trade as Chobi, is today the signature product of Afghan workshop weavers, and it is one of the few living traditions still producing classical all over floral drawing entirely by hand. The wool is handspun rather than machine-spun, which is exactly why the dye sits unevenly and gives the field that shifting depth, and the knotting is firm and regular across the full 96 inch width, with straight sides and square corners visible in the flat overhead photograph. The back shown in the final images is tight and clear, each knot row distinct on cotton warps, the mark of a rug woven on a properly tensioned loom rather than rushed. Among hand-knotted Oriental rugs in this price bracket, an Afghan Zigler in this condition, never walked on and with full original pile, is about the most durable floor covering you can put into a busy room.
