8'2" x 10'6" Afghan Chobi Peshawar Rug | Chotan All Over Floral | Natural Wool, Never Used

This is a brand new, never used Chobi Peshawar in the Chotan drawing, hand-knotted in Afghanistan on a cotton foundation with a full natural wool pile. The face is quiet and sun-warmed rather than bright: a sand beige ground carrying an all over floral design, framed by a wide pale blue border. It is the kind of Oriental rug that reads as an antique from across the room and as a crisp new weave once you kneel on it. Every piece we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted, its materials and its origin.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is built as a repeating lattice of large lobed palmettes and 8 petal rosettes, joined by thin scrolling vines and long serrated leaves that lean diagonally across the beige ground, so the eye keeps moving instead of settling in one spot. Smaller cypress-like sprays and cloud-band curls fill the gaps between the big flower heads, and every element is drawn with a fine cocoa brown outline that keeps the soft colors legible. The main border repeats a grand palmette alternating with a shield-shaped cartouche on the blue ground, and it is fenced on both sides by golden guard stripes of small rosettes, with a narrow ivory outer guard at the selvage. All 4 corners are resolved cleanly, which is a good sign of a well-drawn cartoon rather than a rushed one.

A Palette of Sand Beige, Light Blue and Rust Coral

The field is a warm sand beige that shifts toward cream under direct light and toward oatmeal in shade, and the wash has left the wool with a low, waxy sheen you can see in the close-up photos. Against it the flowers are worked in rust coral and a softer terracotta pink, with apricot gold in the leaf tips and small touches of pale grey-blue in the flower centers. The main border is the anchor: a hazy light blue, almost a dusty aqua, with gentle variation across its width that comes from the dye lots in the wool rather than from any fading. Cocoa brown does the outlining throughout and gives the design its backbone, while ivory highlights inside the palmettes and along the guard stripes lift the whole thing. It is a low-contrast, forgiving palette that sits comfortably with oak, walnut, linen and off-white walls.

Afghan Weaving in the Peshawar Tradition

Chobi Peshawar rugs are woven by Afghan weavers working to the standards that grew up around the Peshawar trade, and the Chotan drawing is one of the most collected patterns in that group. The wool is the point: highland fleece with long staple and real spring, knotted tight enough to hold this much fine floral detail and then washed to mellow the colors. Turn the corner over, as in the folded photo, and the back shows even rows, straight sides and a clean, legible knot, which is what lets a rug this size lie flat and wear evenly for decades.
