This 8'2" x 9'7" Chobi Peshawar piece is the quiet kind of Oriental rug that settles a room without arguing with anything already in it. The pile is natural hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted entirely by hand, and the wool has that slightly irregular, hand-carded surface that catches light differently as you cross the room. It reads as a true 8 x 10 area rug in a living room or dining room, sitting comfortably under a sofa group or a six seat table. The rug is brand new and has never been on a floor, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted piece made in Afghanistan.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries an all over floral composition of large open palmettes, split leaves and rosettes linked by a loose scrolling vine, drawn in the Ziegler manner with plenty of ground left visible between the forms. The drawing is deliberately soft edged rather than tight, which is why the pattern never crowds the eye. A wide ivory main border runs a repeating palmette and vine, separated from the field by narrow guard stripes, and the 4 corners are resolved cleanly so the border turns without breaking its rhythm. Small serrated leaves and 8 petal rosettes fill the spaces between the larger elements, and the close photographs show how much fine outlining in coral and brown holds each motif in shape.

The Light Blue and Ivory Palette

The field is a soft light blue with a faint grey cast, closer to a weathered sky than to a saturated denim, and it shifts gently across the width the way hand-spun, hand-dyed wool always does. Against it the motifs are worked in ivory, cream and a warm sandy beige, with mushroom brown used for outlines and stems. The accent color is coral, appearing as small clipped flowerheads, hooked ornaments and outline strokes that keep the whole surface from going cold, and a deeper blue turns up inside the larger rosettes for contrast. The border reverses the scheme, putting ivory underneath and letting pale blue and coral do the drawing. It is a low contrast, muted palette that works with grey upholstery, warm wood, brass and off white walls equally well.

Chobi Peshawar Weaving and Quality

Chobi Peshawar rugs are woven by Afghan weavers working in the Peshawar tradition, using highland wool that is spun by hand rather than by machine. That hand-spun yarn is the whole point: it takes dye unevenly, so the finished field has depth and movement instead of a flat printed look. The back photograph shows an even, well compacted knot with straight rows and no pulling at the sides, and the selvages are firmly wrapped with a clean fringe finish at both ends. The pile is cut at a medium height, heavy enough to feel substantial underfoot and short enough to keep the drawing legible.
