8' x 10'3" Agra Rug | William Morris All Over Floral | Black Field, New and Never Used
Laid flat, this 8' x 10'3" rug reads more like a woven tapestry than a floor covering. A black field carries an unbroken system of ivory vines and serrated palmettes, and a wide ivory border is planted with flowering bushes in rust, olive and burgundy. The drawing belongs to the William Morris repertoire, the Arts and Crafts vocabulary that grew directly out of classical Agra and Mughal carpet design, and here it has come back to the source: hand-knotted in India in natural wool on a cotton foundation. The pile is new, deep and unworn, the rug has never been on a floor, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. It also lands in the 8x10 area rugs range, the single most requested proportion we sell, wide enough to carry a full sofa group or a dining table set for 6.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the field is built as a continuous lattice, one of the classic all over rugs compositions, with ivory stems arching into ogee curves and meeting again at large 8 petal rosettes drawn in olive, gold and burgundy with a white pinwheel center. Between the arches sit broad serrated palmettes, oak-shaped leaves, small rust cartouche buds, and tiny blue and red starflowers that punctuate the empty ground. At the base of the field a red, blue and gold sunburst palmette anchors the whole pattern the way a vase would in a prayer design. The inner band is saffron gold, filled with a fine floral meander and slim cypress sprigs. The main ivory border is the showpiece: alternating bouquets of rust poppies and olive blossoms, pale green leaf-shaped cartouches, and small stylized tool and tulip motifs scattered in the open cream ground. A narrow black outer guard with a floral trail frames the whole thing and ties it back to the field.
The Black Ground and Its Palette
The field is a true black, dense and even, with just enough depth in the wool that it photographs almost ink-blue where the light rakes across the pile. Against it every other color reads at full strength: warm ivory and cream in the vines and border ground, a saffron gold inner band that glows against the dark, rust and terracotta in the flower heads, oxblood burgundy in the outlines, and two greens, a soft olive and a paler pistachio, doing most of the leaf work. Small touches of powder blue and dusty salmon appear inside the rosettes and give the palette its antique softness rather than a hard contemporary contrast. Black grounds are demanding because they show every irregularity in the dye lot, and this one stays consistent corner to corner. In a room it behaves like a dark hardwood floor would: it grounds pale furniture, makes ivory and brass look intentional, and gives a light-walled space a center of gravity.
Woven in India in the Agra Tradition
Agra has been a carpet town since the Mughal court workshops, and that lineage is exactly what nineteenth century English designers were studying when the Arts and Crafts floral style took shape. India is today where most of the world's genuinely good contemporary hand-knotted work is made, and this piece is a fair example of why: the knotting is fine enough to hold a curved vine without breaking it into steps, the ivory outlining stays one or two knots wide all the way around the field, and the border bouquets keep their shape at small scale. The wool is a good natural quality with a clean luster, set on a cotton foundation and clipped to a medium pile that has body underfoot without burying the drawing. Call it what the trade calls it, an Oriental rug in the correct sense of the term: hand-knotted, wool on cotton, drawn from a classical eastern design tradition, and made to be walked on for decades.
