12' x 15'4" Indian Agra Rug | Olive Green All-Over Floral Vine Field | New, Never Used

Green grounds at this scale are unusual, and that is the first thing you notice about this hand-knotted Agra. The field is a deep olive that reads almost bronze where the light rakes across the pile, and it is covered edge to edge with a coral red and ivory vine system. At 12' x 15'4" it belongs in the oversize rug class, wide enough to carry a full seating group plus the walkway behind it, and it is a genuine Oriental rug in the strict sense: hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a natural wool pile, no machine work anywhere in it. The piece is new and has never been on a floor, so the pile stands full height and the drawing is still crisp at every corner. It ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting the weave, materials and origin.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver used an all-over floral layout built from long ogival vines that arch across the field and meet at coral red cartouche panels, each one capped with a split palmette in ivory. Inside those compartments sit 8 petal rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves, small footed flower vases and clusters of tulip and carnation heads, drawn in ivory, pink, tan and rose so the pattern never turns into a single block of color. The repeat runs the full length of the rug, so the design resolves cleanly whatever way furniture sits on it. The main border is a coral red ground carrying alternating cream rosette medallions and scalloped vine cradles, and it is fenced on both sides by a stack of narrow guard stripes: a reciprocal zigzag band, a small box and rosette meander, and an outer floral stripe. The corners are properly turned, not chopped, which is a fair test of the cartoon and the weaver following it.

Color: Olive Green Field Against Coral Red Borders

The field is an olive to moss green with visible abrash, the natural tonal shift from dye lot to dye lot, which keeps such a large open ground alive rather than flat. Against it the vine work sits in coral red, terracotta and a softer salmon, with the brightest reds reserved for the cartouche panels and the small rosette heads. Ivory and cream do the outlining, and a warm tan to old gold appears in the leaf tips. The main border is a dusty coral red, one shade cooler than the reds in the field, and the guard bands shift into beige and a pale lavender-tinted cream that gives the border stack depth in person. The selvage and the outer edge return to deep green, so the rug frames itself. Overall it is a warm, muted palette: green, rust and cream rather than jewel tones, which makes it easy to live with next to walnut, brass, leather and off-white upholstery.

Agra Weaving and Quality

Agra, in northern India, has been a weaving center since the Mughal court workshops, and the city's name still stands for a specific look: large-scale floral drawing, generous borders and a soft, slightly lustrous wool. India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is made today, and this piece shows why. Folded back, the weave is tight and even, the knot rows are regular across 12 feet of width with no drawn-in waist, and the back reads the pattern almost as clearly as the front, which is the mark of a dense weave rather than a loose commercial one. The pile is natural wool with real body underfoot, shorn evenly so the outlines stay sharp, and the cotton foundation and cotton fringe are hand-finished rather than machine serged. A rug this size takes a team many months on the loom, and because it has never been used, the buyer gets the entire service life of the wool.
