9' x 12' Indian Ziglar Rug | All Over Floral Vine Design | Brand New, Never Used

This is a full room size 9' x 12' hand-knotted Ziglar rug, woven in India with a wool pile on a cotton foundation and still in untouched condition, never laid in a home. The field runs rust from edge to edge, carrying a continuous lattice of ivory vines and flowering heads with no central medallion, so the eye travels across the whole surface rather than stopping in the middle. The wool has the slight sheen that shows in the pile close-ups, the handle is firm without being stiff, and the selvedges and cotton fringe are clean and original. Among 9x12 Oriental rugs this is the practical, decorator friendly end of the market: a large traditional piece that reads warm and quiet instead of busy. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted rug, with the weave, materials, measurements and origin recorded.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Ziglar all over floral layout: ivory stems arc into ogival compartments, and each compartment is filled with a different flower head. You can count 8 petal and 10 petal rosettes, broad fan shaped palmettes, small serrated leaves, lanceolate split leaves and tiny 4 petal blossoms scattered through the open ground. The repeat mirrors itself across the center line, which is why the field looks organized up close yet dissolves into pure pattern from standing height. The main border is the most interesting part of the rug. Instead of a plain floral band it carries paired deer facing each other across a flowering palm tree, framed by cream rosettes on stems, and that animal and tree sequence runs the full perimeter. A camel ground inner and outer guard stripe filled with maple shaped leaves and small bouquets separates the border from the field, and a narrow ivory line keeps the whole frame crisp.

A Rust Field with Olive Green, Camel and Ivory

The field is rust, a brick toned red with a terracotta cast that shifts slightly toward brown where the pile lies away from the light. Over it the vinework is drawn in ivory and pale cream, the single brightest element in the rug, and the flower heads are worked in olive and sage green, soft gold, camel, mushroom brown and small touches of pale blue grey, with deep forest green reserved for flower centers and leaf tips. A few palmettes are outlined in dark burgundy, which gives the pattern definition against the field. The main border takes the same rust ground, while the guard stripes are camel and light gold, so the whole color scheme stays within the warm half of the spectrum. Alongside rust and orange rugs in general, this one leans earthy rather than orange, and it sits comfortably with walnut and cherry wood, brass, cream walls and leather.

Woven in India to Workshop Standards

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and this rug is a fair example of why. Every knot is tied by hand on a cotton warp, the knot count is even enough that the ivory vines hold a true curve across 12 feet of length, and the pile is clipped at a medium height that shows the drawing without flattening the wool. Quality control shows in the small things: straight sides, square corners, borders that meet correctly at all 4 corners, and a back that is tight and regular, as the tag and fringe photo shows. If you are weighing the difference between this and a comparable city weave, our guide to the distinction between an Oriental rug and its regional cousins is worth reading before you buy. As a new piece with full pile and no wear, this one has its entire service life ahead of it.
