9' x 12' Indian Zigler Rug | All-Over Beige and Blush Lattice | Brand New, Never Used

Measuring a true 9' x 12', this is a brand new, never used hand-knotted weaving in the Zigler idiom: a wide, quiet beige field carrying an all-over lattice of octagonal compartments, each one centered on a near-black star rosette. The wool pile is clipped low and even, so in raking light the surface reads closer to velvet than to a thick plush, and the drawing is deliberately soft-edged in the way the best antique reproductions are. It arrives with our certificate of authenticity, confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug rather than a power-loomed imitation. Among 9x12 hand-knotted rugs, this one is unusually easy to live with, because nothing in the palette argues with the room it lands in.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The overhead studio photograph reads warmer and more caramel than the rug truly is. The angled floor shots and the close-up detail images are the honest guide to color: a soft beige ground with blush, camel and muted gold, not orange.

Design and Motifs

The field is organized as a repeating lattice of large octagonal and lobed compartments drawn in a single fine dark outline, an all-over design with no central medallion, which is exactly why it sits so calmly under furniture. Each compartment holds an 8 petal star rosette in deep near-black with a gold outline and ivory petal tips, and between them sit curling cloudband tendrils, small gold palmettes, split leaves and tiny blush buds. The main border carries a slow alternation of gold lotus palmettes flanked by dark serrated leaves and small rose-pink quatrefoil rosettes, framed on both sides by narrow ivory and blush diamond guard stripes that give the edge a woven, basketwork rhythm. The 4 corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif, a detail that separates a properly cartooned weaving from a quick commercial copy, and the ends finish in plain cotton fringe.

The Beige, Blush and Near-Black Palette

The ground is a warm beige that shifts between oatmeal, sand and light camel depending on how the light crosses the pile, with gentle horizontal banding where the wool took the dye slightly differently from batch to batch. Over that sit three working colors: a soft antique gold that carries most of the vine work and the palmettes, a dusty blush rose that appears in the small border rosettes and the compartment buds, and a very deep plum that reads as black at a glance and anchors every star rosette and leaf tip. Ivory highlights lift the petal tips and the guard stripes, while a light brown tone deepens the border ground so the field looks brighter than it is. The overall effect is a neutral that still has color in it, which means it works against cream plaster, pale oak, walnut and gray upholstery without needing anything else in the room to change.

Woven in India in the Zigler Tradition

This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that without hedging: the northern Indian weaving belt has the cartoon drafting, the wool sorting and the master weavers to execute a reproduction at this level. The Zigler style itself was developed by 19th century export workshops for Western interiors, trading the tight court medallion for a large-scale, open all-over repeat, and this weaving follows that brief faithfully. The back shown in the detail photographs is flat and regular, with the knots lined up in even rows across a cotton foundation and no pulling at the selvedges, which is what carries a 9 by 12 piece through decades of traffic. The wool is hand-spun and high in lanolin, so the low clip has sheen rather than fuzz, and the pile will burnish instead of flattening as the rug is walked on.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
