9' x 12' Modern Oriental Rug | Wool and Silk Floral Vine Design | Brand New, Never Used
Laid out flat, this 9' x 12' hand-knotted rug behaves more like a painted panel than a conventional floor covering. One continuous vine wanders across an open beige ground, and because there is no border to fence it in, the eye follows the stems from one edge of the field to the other. The pile is wool with silk carried through the leaves and the flower outlines, which is why the drawing stands slightly proud of the ground and shifts tone as you walk around it. The piece is brand new, never used, and ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted rug. Anyone shopping 9x12 area rugs for a living room or a wide open-plan space will recognise the appeal: a neutral field that calms a busy room, with just enough hand-drawn botanical detail to keep it from reading as plain.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The overhead studio photograph shows the field as a cool cream ivory, while the floor and close-up shots taken in warm daylight read as a deeper golden beige. That difference is lighting and the silk sheen catching the light, not fading, staining or any variation in the dye. In an average room the ground sits between the two: a warm beige that leans ivory in daylight and gold under lamps.
Design and Motifs
The whole composition is built from a single swirling vine system that loops across the field in long, lazy S curves, never repeating the same arc twice. Hung on those stems are large open lilies with 5 and 6 broad petals, each petal filled in golden brown or apricot and then cut through with fine burgundy stamen lines that fan out from the centre. Several blossoms carry a small scalloped bud crown above them, one with a pale grey-green crest at its heart, and the vines are punctuated by tiny 5 petal star flowers in deep burgundy. Lanceolate leaves, drawn with a curling tip and a single interior vein, do most of the structural work: they set the rhythm and fill the space between flower groups. There is no border and no medallion, so the balance of the piece rests entirely on how the designer spaced the vines. The open beige areas are as deliberate as the flowers, and seen from floor level in the detail photographs the silk-outlined leaves cast a faint carved shadow across the wool, giving the surface relief without any actual carving.
A Beige Ground with Olive, Golden Brown and Burgundy
The ground is a warm beige that moves between ivory and soft honey gold depending on the light and on the direction of the pile, with faint abrash-like shading where the weavers worked through different batches of wool. Against it the palette is tight and autumnal. Leaves run from a dusty olive and sage green through to a tobacco brown on the undersides, often shaded within a single leaf so that one half reads green and the other half bronze. The large blossoms are golden brown, caramel and apricot, outlined and veined in a dark burgundy that is almost chocolate in the shadows, and the small star flowers repeat that burgundy as sharp punctuation marks across the field. The vine stems themselves are a mid brown that keeps everything anchored. Where silk sits in the leaves and petals it throws back a soft highlight, so the greens and golds look wet in raking light and matte when you stand the other way. If you are building a neutral scheme, this belongs with the beige and ivory rugs that work alongside oak, linen and walnut rather than competing with them.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This is a modern hand-knotted piece made in China, and the back tag reads "GENUINE HAND WOVEN ORIENTAL RUG" with the inventory number F-4087. Chinese workshops have long specialised in exactly this kind of work: a clean open field, flowing curvilinear drawing, and silk used as a highlight yarn rather than as the whole pile, which demands a steady knot count and disciplined clipping to keep the curves smooth. The folded corner photograph shows even, regular rows and a straight selvedge, and the rolled edge shows a generous wool pile with real body underfoot, heavy enough to lie flat in a large room without rippling. A buyer weighing this against a city-name weave should understand where it sits in the family, and our guide to Persian rugs vs Oriental rugs explains the distinction honestly. As a piece of modern and contemporary hand-knotted weaving at 9 by 12 feet, it is a lot of handmade surface in a quiet, liveable design, and it has never seen a floor.
