This is a finely hand-knotted wool and silk Oriental rug in the classic Tabriz drawing, made in China on a cotton foundation and never put down in a home. At 9' x 12' it covers a full seating group or a 8 seat dining table with room to pull the chairs out, and it sits squarely in the most requested of all 9x12 rugs. The pile is still full and upright, the ivory ground is clean corner to corner, and the hand-tied fringe has never been walked on. Design and Motifs

The field is a medallion free all over composition, which is the harder Tabriz layout to draw well because nothing anchors the eye and every repeat has to hold its own. Hair thin vine scrolls run edge to edge over the ivory ground, breaking into small buds, curled saz leaves and clusters of open roses and carnations that gather into crescent shaped sprays. Eight shield form cartouches in olive and taupe are set in two staggered columns along the sides, with matching half cartouches centered at each end and quarter units filling the 4 corners, so the layout reads as balanced without ever repeating itself exactly. The main border carries a broad black band of scrolling palmettes and leafy arabesques, flanked by a mauve guard stripe of linked daisies and an outer ivory band of the same running flower chain. Look at the corners in the detail photograph and you can see the border turns cleanly, which is the mark of a drawn cartoon rather than a copied one.

Ivory Ground, Black Border and Burgundy Accents

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to fresh cream than to stark white, and the silk worked into the vine scrolls makes it shift between pale gold and soft grey as you walk around it. Against that, the main border is a deep true black, almost matte in the wool and glossy where the silk outlines the leaves, which frames the pale field the way a dark mat frames a print. The flowers carry the color: burgundy and wine red at the heart of the roses, soft rose pink on the outer petals, and sage to olive green in the leaves, with small accents of charcoal and ink blue tucked into the darkest blossom centers. The guard stripes are a dusty mauve taupe that softens the jump from black to ivory. It is a light room rug at heart, ivory forward and easy to live with, but the black border gives it enough weight to hold a dark wood floor or a deeply colored wall.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in China, in the workshop tradition that took up the Tabriz cartoon and the fine curvilinear style and built its own reputation on it. The specifics are visible in the last photograph: a tight, even knot count laid against the ruler, straight ribs, a dense cotton foundation and hand-tied fringes that come off the warps rather than being sewn on. The pile is a blend of wool and silk, the wool cropped low so the drawing stays crisp and the silk reserved for the vine work, the flower highlights and the border outlines, where it catches light and lifts those lines off the surface. Low pile and a high knot count are what let a weaver draw a rose with five distinguishable petals at the scale you see here, and it is also what makes a rug like this wear slowly and clean well over decades.
