This 9' x 12' hand-knotted Oriental rug was woven in China in the classic Tabriz manner: a jet black field carrying an all-over floral system, framed by a burgundy main border and ivory guard stripes. The pile is a wool and silk blend clipped to 3/8", short enough to hold the fine drawing of each palmette crisply, with the silk catching light on the petal edges as you walk past. The rug is new and never used, with full pile, straight sides and clean ivory cotton fringe at both ends. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted, along with its materials and dimensions.

Design and Motifs

The field is a mirrored all-over composition rather than a single medallion layout: thin curling vines run the full length of the rug, carrying large lobed palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, small five-petal blossoms and slender serrated leaves. A compact rosette cluster marks the center point, and the drawing repeats symmetrically to each side and to each of the 4 corners, so the pattern reads as continuous from any angle. Three borders enclose it: a wide burgundy main band of alternating palmettes and scrolling vinework, an ivory to taupe guard stripe of small flower heads on a thin meander, and a narrow black outer band that ties the frame back to the field.

Color Palette

Black is the ground, deep and even across the whole field, which is what gives the flowers their lift. Against it the palmettes are worked in ivory and soft cream that warms toward honey and pale gold at the centers, with dusty rose and antique pink picked out in the smaller blossoms and in the hearts of the larger flowers. The vines and leaves are sage and olive green, drawn thin so they trace the movement instead of crowding it. The main border is a dark burgundy that turns wine red in direct light, and the guard stripe sits between the two as a quiet oatmeal ivory. The silk content concentrates in the pale flower heads, so the highlights shift as the light or your viewing angle changes.

Made in China, this rug follows the Tabriz drawing tradition, and Chinese ateliers built their reputation on exactly this kind of work: a tight, regular knot on a cotton foundation, precise curvilinear line, and a low even clip that keeps the floral detail legible.
