7'7" x 10' Indian Oriental Rug | Brown Field All-Over Floral | New, Never Used
A brown ground this deep is unusual in traditional hand-knotted work, and it is the reason this piece reads as quietly formal rather than ornate. The rug measures 7'7" x 10', which places it with 8x10 Persian and Oriental rugs for planning purposes, so it covers a standard seating group with margin to spare on all 4 sides. It is knotted entirely by hand on a cotton foundation with a hand-spun wool pile, clipped low enough to hold crisp outlines yet thick enough to feel substantial underfoot, as the rolled edge and folded corner photos show. The piece is new and has never been used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, materials and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The flat overhead studio photograph lifts the field toward a pale taupe mauve because the wool has a natural sheen that reflects strong overhead light. The floor photographs taken at an angle are the truer reading: a warm mocha brown. Expect the field to shift between those two tones depending on where the light falls in your room, which is normal behavior for lustrous hand-spun wool and not a dye flaw.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver filled the field with a balanced all-over floral design built on a slender gold vine that loops and rejoins across the full length of the rug. Hooked along it are tall fan-crested palmettes, split arabesque leaves with serrated edges, 8 petal rosettes drawn flat like coins, and small 5 petal blossoms scattered into the open brown ground. The drawing mirrors cleanly on both the long and short axes, so the pattern resolves the same way from either end of the room. A narrow inner guard stripe of running vine separates the field from a wide main border carrying alternating shield palmette bouquets and upright rosette sprays, with a reciprocal vine stripe on the outer edge. Selvages are finished in brown, and the warp ends are tied off into plain ivory fringe at both ends.
A Study in Brown, Gold and Olive
The field is a soft mocha brown with a taupe cast, one of the harder grounds to get right because it has to stay warm without going muddy. Against it the vine work is wheat gold and old ivory, the heavier palmettes are shaded from cream through soft teal blue into burgundy, and the leaves run through olive and sage green. Small pinpricks of dark navy sit at the centers of many rosettes and give the pattern its focus at close range, while touches of peach and soft rose keep the palette from reading too dark. The main border reverses the scheme: a camel gold ground, paling to ivory along the long sides, with burgundy and brick red flower heads doing the work the gold does in the field. Buyers shopping brown Oriental rugs for walnut or espresso furniture will find this one sits with wood tones instead of fighting them.
Made in India: Weave and Workmanship
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and this rug is a fair example of why: traditional drawing executed with workshop discipline and genuinely good wool. The back, visible in the final photograph, shows even rows of knot nodes on a cotton foundation with no bulges or waisting, which is what you want to see before you buy any Oriental rug sight unseen. The hand-spun pile carries a natural luster that photographs almost like silk where the light catches the longer floral outlines, and it will burnish rather than flatten with use. Edges are straight, the rug lies flat, and the ends are squared, so it will sit properly in a room from day one.
