8'9" x 12'5" Agra Oriental Rug | Ivory Field All Over Ziegler Floral | Brand New, Never Used
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted room-size rug measuring 8'9" x 12'5", woven in the Ziegler manner with the drawing and palette collectors associate with Agra workshop production. The field is a soft ivory, the main border a deep berry red, and the whole surface is carried by an uninterrupted vine system rather than a central medallion, which is why it sits so easily in a furnished room. The pile is natural wool at 3/8" and still carries its full height, with clean selvedges and bright, untrimmed fringe on both ends. It is a genuine Oriental rug, knot by knot, on a cotton foundation, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials, construction and measurements. Within our inventory of 9x12 Oriental rugs this one is unusual for how quiet the ground is against how much color sits in the flowers.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first overhead photograph was shot under warmer light and reads more golden and uneven than the rug actually is, with a few light streaks across the field that are reflections, not wear, fade or damage. The close-up and angled photographs show the true color: a clean, even ivory ground. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over design, built from a lattice of thin coral and rose vines that loop into large curled tendrils and link one blossom group to the next. The repeating units are broad serrated leaf rosettes, open 8 petal flower heads, fan shaped palmettes and small lily and carnation sprays, each one drawn with an outline color different from its interior so the motif reads clearly at floor level. A small star rosette sits at the center of every lattice compartment. The main border carries alternating cypress-leaf palmettes and 6 petal star flowers on a continuous meandering vine, framed on both sides by a narrow guard stripe of pink and green blossoms set in a running scroll. The 4 corners resolve cleanly, with the border vine turning without the awkward break you see on cheaper looms, a good sign the design was drawn to this exact size rather than cut to fit.
Ivory, Berry Red and Green Color Detail
The ground is a warm ivory that leans toward light cream rather than stark white, which lets the wool's natural luster show as the light moves across it. Against that the main border is a saturated berry red, a cool crimson with a raspberry cast rather than a brick or tomato red, and it is deep enough to anchor the ivory without overpowering it. The guard stripes shift to a soft antique gold. The flowers themselves hold the rest of the palette: sage and olive green in the large leaves, a smoky teal in the centers of several rosettes, dusty rose and coral in the petals, mustard and apricot in the smaller buds, and a dark chocolate to near-black outline used sparingly to sharpen the biggest leaf forms. Pale ivory star flowers scattered through the red border tie the two halves of the color scheme together, and small accents of light sky blue appear in the guard stripes and petal centers.
Made in India: Weaving Town and Quality
India is where most of the world's finest contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and the Agra and Bhadohi weaving belts in particular have kept the classical Ziegler repertoire alive on full-size looms. This piece shows it: hand-spun wool with a slight variation in dye uptake that reads as natural abrash rather than machine flatness, a tight and regular knot count across all 105" of width, and a 3/8" pile clipped evenly so the drawing stays crisp. The cotton warp and weft give the rug a straight, flat lay and the body to handle a dining table or a sofa grouping without rippling. Look at the back-tag photograph and you can see the individual knots on the reverse, which is the quickest honest test of a hand-knotted rug. Knotted new and never walked on, this one begins its life with the full 3/8" of wool intact, which for a contemporary hand-knotted rug of this scale is decades of service ahead of it.
