Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is an all over floral design, built from four large lobed palmettes set near the corners, a column of smaller crowned blossoms running up the center axis, and rows of open rosettes and half-palmettes filling the ground between them. Curled serrated leaves and small budded sprays sit in the gaps, and the whole arrangement is tied together by a thin brown vine that you only notice once you are standing over the rug, visible clearly in the close field photographs. The main border is a classic turtle-and-rosette vine: alternating shield-shaped cartouches and round flower heads linked by a thin scrolling stem, with a narrow flowering guard stripe on each side and a black outer stripe that echoes the field.
