This 7'10" x 10' Jaipur piece is brand new, never laid in a home, and it is the kind of contemporary hand-knotted work that reads formal without reading old. The pile is 100% wool on a cotton foundation, clipped evenly, with a low even nap that lets the drawing stay crisp across a black field and a wide ivory border. The proportions make it a practical 8 x 10 area rug for a sofa group or a six chair dining table, and the reverse (photographed with a ruler laid across the border) shows the tight, regular knotting behind the design. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field is drawn as a true all over floral composition: large fan shaped palmettes and 8 petal rosettes strung on a thin curving vine, with serrated leaves, small buds and split leaf forms filling the spaces between. The drawing mirrors along the center axis, so the pattern repeats symmetrically left to right and reads as one continuous garden rather than a row of repeats. The main border carries big open palmettes alternating with pairs of long acanthus style leaves, each flower centered with a small dark cartouche that gives the border its rhythm. Two narrow guard stripes of meandering rosette vine frame it on both sides, and a fine black outer edge finishes the perimeter into ivory fringe at both ends. It is a transitional design in the honest sense: traditional floral vocabulary, drawn open enough that the furniture in a modern room does not fight it.

Color Palette

The field is black, deep and near solid, with a faint charcoal cast where the light crosses the pile in the showroom photographs. Against it the florals sit in old gold, honey and camel, some palmettes shading toward pale wheat at the tips and dropping to a darker bronze at the base, which is what gives the flowers their depth. The vine work is drawn in a pale ivory that reads almost silver over the black. Sage and olive green appear through the leaves in measured amounts, and small accents of rust, terracotta and soft pink turn up in the flower centers, most clearly in the corner close up. The main border moves from ivory at its inner edge to a warm beige and light camel toward the outside, so the frame lifts away from the field instead of merging with it. Black outlining inside the border flowers ties the two halves of the palette together, and the ivory fringe repeats the lightest tone in the border.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the main hand-knotting centers of northern India, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted rugs are now made. That is not a consolation prize: the better Jaipur workshops weave from a graphed design on a cotton warp, use well spun wool with real lanolin left in it, and keep the knot count high enough to carry curved vine work and fine outlining like the tracery on this field. The wool takes dye cleanly, which matters on a black ground where a weak dye lot shows immediately, and the pile has the slight sheen you can see in the raking light of the floor photographs. The rug is finished flat and true, with straight sides, even ends and a firm handle for its thickness, and being new it has its full pile height, full fringe and no restoration of any kind.
