8' x 11'9" Indian Agra Ziegler Rug | Ivory All-Over Floral Field | Brand New Vegetable Dyed Wool

This is a brand new, never used Agra rug hand-knotted in India in the Ziegler manner, measuring 8' x 11'9" with a soft ivory to wheat field and a deep red main border. The pile is natural hand-spun wool colored with vegetable dyes, which is why the ground reads gold in one light and pale cream in another, and why no two flower heads across the field carry exactly the same value of green or salmon. The handle is supple, the knotting is even, and the ivory fringe is original to the weave rather than sewn on. Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic all-over floral layout with no central medallion, built on a lattice of thin brown vine that links large sage green palmettes, 8 petal rosettes in salmon and ivory, serrated teal lotus heads and small burgundy flower clusters. The drawing is generous and open rather than crowded, so the beige ground stays visible and the whole composition reads calm from across a room. A shield-shaped palmette anchors the center of each half of the field, and the repeat is drawn with the slight hand variation that separates a genuine loom piece from a printed copy. The border system runs 3 bands: a wide crimson main border of leafy vine and blossom, flanked by camel guard borders of paired flower heads, with fine blue-grey outlines separating each band. Corners resolve cleanly, which on a rug of this length is a sign of careful cartoon work at the loom.

A Soft Beige Ground Against Crimson and Sage

The dominant color is a warm beige that moves between cream, wheat and pale gold depending on the direction of the pile, the natural result of hand-spun wool taking vegetable dye unevenly across the batch. Against it the palette is deliberately soft: sage and olive greens in the large palmettes, muted teal and slate blue in the smaller blossoms, apricot and salmon pink in the rosette centers, and dark burgundy dots that give the field its punctuation. The main border is a true deep red, closer to garnet than to orange, and the camel outer guard band carries pale green, ivory and rose detail that bridges the border back into the field. There is no harsh contrast anywhere in the piece, which makes it forgiving next to oak floors, cream walls, leather and mid-tone woods.

Agra has been a weaving center since the Mughal court kept workshops there, and the city still produces some of the best hand-knotted work being made anywhere. India is now where most of the world's serious contemporary hand-knotted production happens, and we say that without hedging: the wool is hand-spun, the dyes are plant based, and the weavers are working on cotton warps at a knot density you can feel in the back of the piece. Turn this one over and the pattern is legible from the reverse, the knot rows are straight, and the selvages are tight and hand-overcast.
