9' x 12' Indian Agra Rug | Ziegler All Over Floral Design | Brand New Wool Pile
This 9' x 12' Agra rug is brand new, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the Ziegler manner that Indian workshops have made their own: a continuous field of broad palmettes and serrated leaves, no central medallion, and a palette dialed back so the rug looks as though it has already spent twenty quiet years in a room. The field sits between camel and warm beige, the main border is a deep coral rust, and at 108 inches by 144 inches it covers a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. It ships with a certificate of authenticity. Anyone working through 9x12 Oriental rugs will notice how restrained this one reads for a rug carrying this much drawing.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over design, built on a loose lattice of thick gold and brown vines that swell and turn rather than follow a tight repeat. Inside that framework sit large spiky palmettes, fan shaped leaf clusters with saw tooth edges, slender cypress and willow sprigs, small boteh buds on stems, and little squared rosettes dropped in as filler. The drawing is deliberately bold and slightly angular, so the pattern reads clearly from standing height instead of dissolving into texture. The main border runs a procession of cream and ivory palmettes on coral, each one flanked by dark leaves, with the corners resolved cleanly rather than cut off. Flanking it are two narrow guard stripes of small 4 petal stars and a wider outer band of alternating leaf tips in rust and olive on beige, finished with plain selvages and a short knotted fringe at both ends.
Beige, Coral and Sage Green in the Wool
The ground is a sandy beige that shifts toward ivory in the center and toward light camel near the ends, with soft horizontal variation in the wool that reads as depth rather than inconsistency. Against it the main border is coral rust, warm and slightly brick toned, lighter and more apricot along one side where the light catches the pile. The palmettes and leaves carry the rest of the range: sage and olive green, dusty mushroom taupe, oxidized chocolate brown, honey gold, and small bright touches of rose red at the flower tips that keep the whole scheme from going flat. Ivory outlining separates each motif from the field, which is what makes a muted rug like this still look crisp. The overall impression is warm neutral, friendly to oak, walnut and cream upholstery, and easy next to both antique furniture and plainer contemporary pieces.
Woven in India: the Ziegler Tradition and the Weave
The Ziegler style began in the 1880s, when a European firm commissioned large scale, softly colored versions of classical designs for Western houses, and the Agra ateliers of northern India have been refining that same vocabulary ever since. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug shows why: an even, dense wool pile, straight sides, a flat lying handle, and knotting tight enough to hold the serrated leaf edges without blurring them. The wool takes a gentle sheen in raking light, visible in the rolled and folded detail photos, and the back shows regular rows on a cotton foundation. If you are weighing how this compares with city workshop weaving from Persia, our guide on what separates a Persian rug from a broader Oriental rug lays out the differences in weave, design and value.
