Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead a thin gold vine runs in a loose lattice across the whole field, linking large open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, curling split leaves and small 4 petal blossoms, with a run of bigger cartouche shaped flower heads down the center axis. The drawing is curved and relaxed rather than rigid, and the repeat is large enough that furniture can sit on the rug without swallowing the pattern. The main border is the showpiece: ivory ground with alternating star rosettes and leafy palmettes, each one outlined in gold and filled with soft blue and burgundy centers. A sage green minor border with a small meandering flower vine separates border from field, and a matching narrow outer stripe closes the design. The corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning properly instead of being cut off, which is a fair test of how carefully the cartoon was followed.

A Wine Burgundy Field Against Ivory and Sage

The field reads as a deep wine burgundy, closer to claret than to a bright tomato red, with gentle tonal movement across the width where the wool takes the dye slightly differently from batch to batch.
