This is a brand new, never used 8' x 11' Chobi Peshawar in the Ziglar manner, knotted entirely by hand in wool on a cotton foundation. The field is a deep chocolate brown, unusual in a room-size hand-knotted Oriental rug and the reason this piece works where a red or ivory ground would fight the furniture. The pile is clipped low and even, the handle is supple rather than stiff, and the wide sand-beige border gives the whole piece a soft, washed, almost antique presence straight off the loom. Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic all-over floral design, mirrored on the vertical axis and repeating up the length of the field rather than building to a central medallion. Large sunburst rosettes with serrated petals sit across the width, flanked by tall saz leaves that curl and split at the tips, and the whole armature is tied together by thin pale vine scrolls that run corner to corner. Between the big blooms are 8 petal rosettes with small red centers, budding palmettes and tiny paired leaf sprays. The main border carries alternating palmettes and angular leaf fans on a beige ground, with 2 narrow guard stripes of running vine and dot motifs on each side, and the 4 corners are resolved with a bracketed spandrel and a single red flower head, visible in the corner close-up. The outer edge and selvedge are finished in the same dark brown as the field, with plain ivory fringe at both ends.

The Dark Brown Field and Its Beige, Gray and Ivory Palette

The ground is a true chocolate brown, closer to espresso than to black, and the close-up photographs show the gentle horizontal striations of hand-spun wool that keep it from ever looking flat. Against it the flowers read in cream, butter yellow and pale sand, with quiet secondary tones of soft gray, celadon gray-green, terracotta and warm salmon, and small points of clear red in the flower centers.
