8' x 10'4" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Zigler All-Over Floral | Wool & Silk, Brand New

This is a brand new Chobi Peshawar rug in the Zigler all-over floral idiom, hand-knotted in Pakistan with hand-spun wool carrying silk highlights on a cotton foundation. At 8' x 10'4" it covers a standard room layout without crowding it, which is why this remains the most requested of all 8x10 Oriental rugs we stock. The wool has that slightly dry, hand-spun handle that takes natural dye unevenly in the best way, and the pile has never been walked on: the ends are straight, the selvages are tight, and the fringe is original and untrimmed. Every rug we sell leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording the weave, materials and measurements.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design built from large open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and long serrated leaves, strung together on a thin scrolling vine that drifts across the whole surface and repeats on a generous scale rather than a busy one. Look at the close-up images and you can see how much blank ground the drawing leaves between motifs, which is exactly what makes this pattern sit quietly under furniture. The border system runs 3 bands deep: a wide main border of alternating lotus palmettes and vase-like forms, framed by 2 narrow guard stripes ticked with small red and brown devices. Corners resolve cleanly, the vine turning the angle without a break, and the drawing is drafted symmetrically along both the long and short axes.

A Warm Beige and Gold Palette

The ground is a warm beige that leans to soft gold and honey, with gentle abrash striping along the weft lines that lightens and darkens the field by a shade or two as the light moves. Against it the palmettes and leaves are drawn in muted taupe, camel and a dusty sage green, with deeper walnut brown reserved for the larger flower heads in the border. The only saturated note is a thin rust red used as an outline on scattered rosettes and small buds, a few dozen points of color across the entire rug that keep the palette from going flat. Nothing here is bright, and nothing fights the room. For buyers shopping specifically for beige and ivory rugs, this is the warm end of that range rather than the cool grey end.

Peshawar Weaving and the Chobi Tradition

Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is the center of the Chobi trade, where weavers work on cotton warps with hand-spun, hand-carded wool dyed in small natural dye lots. Chobi refers to the wood and plant sources behind those dyes, and it is the reason two rugs from the same workshop never match exactly. The Zigler drawing is named for the 19th century European trading firm that commissioned big, open, large-scale floral fields for western interiors, and Peshawar workshops have carried that vocabulary forward with better wool than most of the market offers today. The knotting on this piece is even and firm, the back shows a clear, regular grid with no pulled rows, and the silk highlights catch across the palmettes when you view it down the length. If you are weighing how a piece like this differs from a workshop weave of another country, our guide to what makes an Oriental rug distinct is the place to start.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
