This 8'3" x 10' Agra is a new, never used hand-knotted piece from India, woven in the classic Agra manner with natural wool on a cotton foundation. It is the kind of Oriental rug that reads as antique in feel but behaves like new goods underfoot: full pile, clean selvedges, straight sides and hand-knotted fringe finished flat at both ends. At 99" by 120" it sits squarely in the most usable of all 8x10 Oriental rugs, large enough to carry the front legs of a full seating group and still hold its drawing in the open center. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries an all over design built from a continuous arabesque vine that loops through the whole surface, hanging palmettes, serrated saz leaves, split lotus blossoms and small 8 petal rosettes off every turn. The drawing is transitional rather than strictly formal: the vine is loose, the scale of the blossoms varies from a full palmette nearly 12" across down to tiny flowerheads tucked between the stems, and the repeat is deliberately irregular so the eye keeps moving. The main border answers the field with alternating turned-over leaves and broad fan palmettes set on a paler ground, framed by two narrow guard bands of running rosettes and a fine vine. All 4 corners are resolved cleanly, which is a good marker of a properly cartooned piece rather than a rushed commercial weave.

A Champagne and Beige Palette with Rust Accents

The ground is a warm beige that shifts toward champagne and pale straw where the light catches the wool, with a soft natural abrash running across the field that gives the surface depth instead of a flat printed look. Against that ground the palmettes are drawn in rust and deep brick red, old gold and honey amber, with cooler counterpoints of soft slate blue and gray green in the leaves and blossom centers, plus small notes of olive and cream outlining. The border sits a shade lighter and more golden than the field, so the frame lifts rather than closes the rug in. It is a genuinely light palette, easy to live with in a room with oak or walnut floors, and forgiving in a space that swings between daylight and lamplight.

Agra has been a weaving center since the Mughal court workshops, and the style that carries its name, an open floral field with a bold leaf and palmette border, is still the benchmark for Indian city weaving. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug shows why: hand-spun natural wool with real luster, a tight and even knot count visible in the close-up of the back and pile, and a medium pile clipped low enough to keep the drawing crisp. The cotton foundation gives it a flat, stable lay right out of the roll, and the wool takes traffic well, so it is a rug meant to be used rather than protected.
