8' x 10' Chobi Peshawar Oriental Rug | Transitional All Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool, Brand New

This is the quiet kind of rug that holds a room together without arguing with anything in it. Hand-knotted in Peshawar from hand-spun natural wool on a cotton foundation, the field sits in a soft camel beige, the drawing is worked in barely-there ivory and dusty brown, and the whole surface has the washed, sun-mellowed look that makes a brand new piece read as though it has been in the family for decades. It is a true Oriental rug, knot by knot, never used, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity. At 8' x 10' it is the workhorse format for a seating group or a dining table, and if you are comparing options in that footprint you can see the rest of our 8x10 Oriental rugs alongside it.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all over design built on a lattice of slender flowering vines that link one open rosette to the next, so the pattern repeats across the full 8 by 10 feet with no central medallion to anchor it to one viewing direction. Rounded 8 and 10 petal rosettes sit at the junctions, flanked by broad leafy palmettes and small 4 petal blossoms scattered in the spaces between, and the vine scrolls thicken into curling serrated leaves where the lattice turns. Three framing bands surround the field: a wide ivory main border filled with alternating palmettes and hooked cloud-band forms, and a pair of narrow guard stripes running a simple meander of buds and leaf tips. The corners resolve cleanly, the inner border turns square at each of the 4 corners, and the pile is clipped low enough that every outline stays legible in person, as the close-up photographs show.

A Neutral Palette of Beige, Ivory and Soft Brown

The ground is a warm camel beige that shifts between sand and pale gold depending on which way the nap is brushed, and the natural abrash of hand-spun wool gives it gentle horizontal movement rather than one flat tone. Over that, the vines and rosettes are drawn in a muted terracotta brown that softens almost to clay in the open field and deepens along the border stripes, while the main border lightens to a creamy ivory that frames the whole piece. A subdued sage green runs through some of the leaf forms and border fills, cool enough to keep the browns from going orange. There is no black, no bright red and no high contrast anywhere, which is precisely why this palette works with oak, walnut, linen, plaster white and gray upholstery. If you are shopping tone first, this one sits comfortably among our beige and ivory rugs.

Peshawar Weaving and the Chobi Tradition

Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, has become one of the most reliable sources of good hand-knotted work in the world, and the Chobi group is its signature: hand-spun wool, natural and vegetable-based dyes, and a classical 19th century drawing vocabulary rendered in deliberately faded tones. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and root dyes that give these rugs their mellow brown and gold range. After weaving, the rug is washed to open the wool and settle the color, which is what produces the antique surface you see here while the knots themselves are brand new and the pile is full. The reverse, visible in the folded photograph, shows an even and tightly packed back on a cotton warp and weft, with the knot rows running straight across the width. Expect it to wear slowly and vacuum easily, the way a well-made wool pile rug should.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
