This is a new, never used hand-knotted Agra rug woven in India, drawn after the antique Agra pieces of the late 19th century and finished in a color scheme you rarely see at this size: a muted sage green field wrapped in a wide gold and ivory border. It fits the classic 8x10 rug footprint, with 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation, hand-tied fringe and a green wool selvage worked by hand along both long sides. The pile is thick and evenly clipped, the back is tight and regular, and as a modern Oriental rug it offers the look of an old workshop piece with none of the wear. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design built from repeating vertical panels: crowned vase forms in rust and gold, tall lattice-filled cartouches, 8 petal rosettes that read almost like starbursts, split leaves and slender serrated vines that link the whole surface together. Each motif mirrors across the vertical axis, so the drawing stays balanced without ever becoming mechanical, and small coral blossoms and ivory buds fill the gaps between the larger forms. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a broad ivory-gold main border of curling palmettes and leafy arabesques, flanked by rust-red floral stripes and fine pearl-dotted guard bands with tiny teal rosettes. The corners resolve cleanly, a detail worth checking on any hand-knotted rug, and the outer red band steps neatly into the green selvage.

The Color Story: Sage Green, Gold and Coral

The field is a soft, slightly grey-toned sage green that shifts toward a light teal in raking light, which is exactly why the photographs show it warmer in the close-ups and cooler in the overhead shots. Against that ground the weavers laid antique gold, burnt orange and deep coral, with brick and burgundy red used sparingly for outlines and flower centers so the pattern stays legible from across the room. Olive and moss greens appear in the leaves, and small touches of ivory and pale peach keep the field from going heavy. The border flips the balance: a creamy gold ground carrying brown, rust and red drawing, with pinpoint teal accents in the rosettes that pick the field color back up. The wool takes an abrash-free, luminous finish, so the gold tones glow and the green reads calm and dusty rather than bright.

Agra Weaving and the Indian Workshop Tradition

Agra, in north India, has been a weaving center since the Mughal court commissioned floral rugs there in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the large, dignified Agra pieces woven in the 1800s are still the benchmark for this design family. Contemporary Indian workshops continue that line, and India is now where most of the world's serious hand-knotted production happens: good hand-spun wool, patient weavers and cartoons copied faithfully from antique originals. You can see the standard in the photos, with straight edges, a level clipped pile, tidy knot rows on the reverse and fine drawing in the border arabesques that would collapse into mush on a coarser weave. The result is a heavy, hard-wearing wool rug that behaves like a decades-old piece from day one.
