10' x 14' Oriental Rug | Ivory All-Over Floral Field | Red and Green Triple Border | Never Used

This is a full room-size hand-knotted piece that has never been on a floor: the pile stands straight, the ivory ends are clean, and the fringe has never been walked on. At 10' x 14' it covers a large living room or a 10 seat dining table with the chairs pulled out, and the drawing is formal enough to anchor a room without fighting the furniture. The field is a pale ivory ground carrying an all over floral system in deep green, navy, brick red and sage, framed by a brick red main border between green guard stripes. The back photo shows an even, tightly packed weave on a cotton foundation with a clear 3/8" wool pile, and the ruler laid across the border gives you an honest look at the knot density. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver ran a classic all over floral design across the whole field, built on thin curling vines that link large radiating rosettes, split palmettes, lotus blossoms, curved serrated leaves and small 8 petal flowerheads. Look closely at image 4 and you can follow the drawing's mirror symmetry: the motifs repeat across the long axis and down the center line, with small brick red cartouche-like blossoms marking the middle of the field where a medallion would otherwise sit. The border system runs 5 bands deep. The wide brick red main border alternates green and ivory palmettes with hooked boteh shapes and tiny dark flower buds; inside and outside it sit green guard borders of ivory rosettes on a scrolling stem, separated by narrow ivory reciprocal sawtooth stripes that keep the whole frame crisp. Corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning cleanly rather than being cut off, which is a sign of a weaver working from a well drafted design rather than improvising at the end.

Ivory Field, Brick Red Border and Deep Green Accents

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to stark white, and because the wool takes light differently along the pile direction it reads a shade lighter from one end of the room and a soft buttery beige from the other. On that ivory, the palette splits three ways: a muted brick red, dusty rather than bright, carries the main border and reappears in small blossoms in the field; a deep pine green fills the two guard borders and shows up in the larger field rosettes; and a soft sage green, almost celadon, lights up the leaves and the ivory-outlined palmettes. Navy is used sparingly but effectively, as outlines and dark rosette centers that give the pattern its definition against the pale ground. Small touches of camel, olive and pale peach appear in individual flowers, visible in the corner close-up. The overall effect is quiet and warm rather than high contrast, which is why an ivory ground of this kind sits comfortably with wood floors, cream walls, brown leather and both antique and transitional furniture.

Hand-Knotted in Pakistan in the Traditional Oriental Style

This rug was made in Pakistan, where the workshop weaving tradition traces back to the Mughal-era ateliers of Lahore and where a great deal of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted floral work is still produced today. Pakistani weavers work on vertical looms with a cotton warp and weft and a wool pile, following a drafted design map knot by knot, and the finer workshops hold a high enough knot count to draw a curved vine and a serrated leaf without the line breaking into steps. You can see that control in the field of this piece: the vines are continuous, the flowerheads are round, and the outlines are single-knot thin. The wool is well spun with a healthy natural sheen, cut here to a 3/8" pile that is short enough to hold detail and dense enough to take traffic in a real dining room. Combined with a brand new, never used condition and a true 10' x 14' room size, it is a straightforward piece of well made hand-knotted Oriental rug weaving with decades of service still ahead of it.
