10' x 14' Zigler Oriental Rug | Ivory Beige All-Over Floral | Brand New, Made in India
This is a full room size piece, 10' x 14', hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and finished with ivory hand-tied fringe at both ends. The field is a soft ivory beige with a faint wheat cast, drawn with an open, wide-spaced vine that carries serrated leaves, palmettes and small rosettes in coral, brick red, sage green and pale slate blue. A deep coral red main border with ivory and sage leafwork frames the whole thing, set off by narrow guard stripes of small squared rosettes. The rug is brand new, has never been on a floor, and ships with a certificate of authenticity. Among 10x14 Oriental rugs this is one of the easiest drawings to live with, because the pale ground keeps a big rug from reading heavy.
Please Note About the Photographs:
One image is a styled room visualization included only to show how a 10' x 14' rug fills a seating area. It is not a photograph of this rug in a home. Every other image is a studio photograph of the actual rug, including the reverse side, the fringe and the hang tag. Studio lighting makes the border read cooler in the overhead shot and warmer in the close-ups; the true tone sits between the two.
Design and Motifs
The Zigler drawing here is a true all-over design with no central medallion: a thin coral vine runs the length of the field and repeats in mirror image on either side of the long axis, so the pattern is symmetrical without ever becoming mechanical. Hanging off that vine are large serrated leaves, split palmettes, small cypress-like forms and 8 petal rosettes, with two broad sage green rosettes sitting near the center where a medallion would otherwise go. The corners resolve cleanly into the border rather than being cut off, which is the mark of a properly drawn cartoon. The main border carries an ivory and sage leaf-and-blossom vine on coral red, and it is bracketed by two guard stripes: a slate blue stripe of tiny hooked brackets and a wheat stripe of small squared rosettes, visible in the close-up of the border. Outlines are single-line coral and aubergine, which keeps every leaf crisp against the pale ground.
Ivory Beige Ground with Coral and Green
The field is the reason to buy this rug. It is not a flat cream but a warm ivory beige that shifts toward wheat and light honey as the pile catches the light, so the ground itself has movement before any motif is drawn on it. Against that, the coral runs through three values: a light salmon coral in the small rosettes, a mid terracotta in the leaves, and a deeper brick red in the main border and the larger palmettes. The greens are muted, a soft sage in the two central rosettes and a drier olive in the border leafwork, never a bright green. Cooling all of it is a pale slate blue used in small doses, in the guard stripe, in a few blossom centers and in the tips of the leaves, plus scattered aubergine and near-black plum accents that give the pattern its depth. Cream highlights in the border blossoms tie the frame back to the field. If you are shopping beige and ivory rugs but want real color in the border, this is that combination.
Made in India: Weave and Quality
This piece was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and the workshops weaving the Zigler idiom there are among the most consistent anywhere. The Zigler name comes from the European trading houses that commissioned large-scale floral rugs for Western interiors in the late 1800s, and the formula has barely changed: open field, restrained palette, big generous drawing meant to be seen across a whole room. Turn this rug over and the weave is even and tight across all 10 feet of width, with no puckering and straight, true selvages, which is what lets a rug this size lie flat. The wool is good, well spun and lustrous, cut to a medium pile that already has sheen in the photographs. If you are weighing the difference between this and a city workshop piece, our guide on what makes an Oriental rug distinct is worth reading before you decide.
