10' x 10' Square Oriental Rug | Zigler All Over Floral | Wool with Silk Highlights, Brand New
True squares are hard to find in hand-knotted work, and a good one at 10' x 10' is harder still. This piece was woven in India in the Zigler manner, with a dark brown field carrying an all over floral drawing and a wide ivory border that frames the whole square cleanly on every side. The pile is wool with a touch of silk, and you can see where the silk sits: the leaves, vine tips and rosette centers catch light and shift as you walk around the rug, while the wool ground stays matte and deep. It is brand new, unused, with full pile, straight sides and even cotton fringe, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug.
Design and Motifs
The field is a continuous all over floral design rather than a medallion layout, which is exactly what makes it work in a square format: the pattern reads correctly from all 4 sides and never looks cropped. Thin gold vines travel across the brown ground, linking large open palmettes, lotus blossoms, serrated leaves and small 5 petal flowers, with the drawing mirrored across the center so the repeat stays balanced. The main ivory border runs a bold scrolling arabesque with anchored palmettes at each side and a full palmette resolving each corner, and it is held between a camel-gold inner band and narrow brown guard stripes with a fine sawtooth edge. The curved line throughout is smooth and confident, a sign of a good cartoon and a weaver who followed it closely.
Color: Dark Brown, Ivory and Soft Green
The ground is a deep chocolate brown, closer to espresso than to a warm tan, and it gives the rug a quiet, grounded base that hides traffic well. Against it the flowers are drawn in sage and olive green, dusty salmon, copper rust, soft apricot, antique gold and small touches of oxblood red, with pale ivory and cream used to lift the largest palmettes. The border shifts the balance completely, moving from ivory at the outer edge to a warm camel gold nearer the field, so the brown center appears to float inside a lighter frame. Because the silk is used selectively in the leaves and vines, the greens and golds change tone with the light, reading soft and muted in the morning and richer under lamplight. The overall palette is warm and neutral, which makes it easy to place with wood, leather and brass.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This rug was made in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving now comes from. The northern Indian workshops kept the classical training alive, and a piece like this one shows it: a tight, even knot count across a cotton foundation, finely drawn curves that need density to hold their shape, hand-spun wool with real luster, and silk worked into the highlights instead of being scattered for effect. The back is clean and regular, the selvages are wrapped in brown, and the pile has the weight you expect from a serious workshop rug rather than a production piece. A 10' x 10' square of this quality is a special order size in most shops, which is part of why it is worth owning when one comes up.
