This is a large, quiet, formal piece: a brand new hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in India in a classic traditional drawing, with a beige field carrying rows of brown and ivory star medallions and a full floral surround. At 12' x 15' it covers a true great room, and it belongs with the oversize 12x15 hand-knotted rugs that anchor an entire open plan rather than float in the middle of one. The wool pile is dense, springy and evenly clipped, the fringe and selvage are clean and untouched, and the back shows straight, regular knotting from edge to edge. It has never been on a floor. Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design, drawn as a repeating grid rather than around a single central medallion. Nine large star medallions sit across the field, each built from an 8 petal core with lobed cartouches radiating out in brown, ivory and slate blue. Between them run rows of small rosettes, curling serrated leaves, split palmettes and delicate flowering sprays, and along the two ends the weaver has placed hatched vase and basket motifs filled with tiny stitched dots, flanked by scrolling stems. The border system runs four bands deep: a wide main border of alternating rosettes and shield-shaped palmettes on a soft pink-beige ground, an inner guard of dark zigzag teeth on pale yellow, and two narrow floral meander stripes that keep the whole frame from looking heavy. The corners resolve cleanly, which on a rug this wide is a real sign of a well-followed cartoon.

A Beige Field With Olive Green and Brown Accents

The ground is a warm wheat beige that runs toward camel gold where the light catches the pile, which makes this one of the easier oversize beige and ivory rugs to live with in a room that already has wood and stone in it. The medallions and the larger palmettes are worked in a deep tobacco brown with ivory and cream highlights, so the pattern reads clearly without shouting. Olive and sage green fill the leaves and the long lancet forms in the border, and there are small, deliberate hits of burgundy, dusty rose, slate blue, black and pale citron in the flower heads. The overall effect is a neutral rug with real color inside it: from standing height it is soft and warm, and up close it turns into a dozen shades that shift as you move around the piece.

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is made today, and this rug is a fair example of why. It is knotted on a cotton foundation with a full wool pile, tied by hand knot by knot across a loom wide enough for a 12 foot width, which takes a team and many months. The drawing is fine enough to carry curved vine work, thin outlines and small flower heads without the shapes going blocky, and the back photo shows the knot rows lying straight and consistent with no pull or waist. The wool takes dye deeply and has a natural luster that you can see in the rolled-edge shot. Handled properly, a hand-knotted wool rug of this weight is a fifty year floor covering, not a five year one.
