9' x 12'6" Indian Sarouk Design Oriental Rug | Red Field, Floral Medallion | New, Never Used

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug woven in India in the classic Sarouk floral manner, and it is the kind of piece that does the decorating for you: a deep red field, a soft ivory main border, and a rounded floral medallion drawn in sage green, navy and cream. At 9' x 12'6" it covers a full living or dining room with all four legs of the furniture on the wool, and it sits just above the standard 9x12 Oriental rugs bracket by an extra 6 inches of length. The pile is 100% wool on a cotton foundation, the fringe is the natural warp knotted off by hand, and the back photograph with the ruler shows an even, tightly packed knot line across the whole width. Design and Motifs

The Sarouk formula is an open red ground scattered with detached floral sprays, and this weaver has followed it closely. Bouquets of roses, carnations and serrated leaves stand upright in ordered rows across the field, each spray drawn separately with its own stems and buds so the red ground still reads as space rather than clutter. In the center sits a rounded, wreath-like medallion built from curling vines, navy rosettes and pale blue blossoms, with matching floral pendants anchoring the four corners and half medallions repeating at the head and foot. The ivory main border runs a continuous vine of large rosettes, curled acanthus leaves and a big blush palmette at each corner, framed by narrow sage guard stripes of small starred flowers. The corner close-up shows how cleanly the outlines are drawn, with each petal shaded through two or three tones rather than filled flat.

Color: Deep Red Field with Ivory and Sage Green Borders

The field is a deep, slightly wine-toned red that shifts with the nap, showing brighter and warmer where the pile lies away from you and darker toward the edges. Against it the flower heads are worked in cream, buttery ivory, dusty rose, apricot and a whole range of greens, from pale celadon leaves to darker forest tones, with small blocks of navy and near black used to outline the medallion and give the drawing depth. The main border is ivory, the cleanest note in the rug, and it is bracketed by two sage green stripes that pick up the greens in the field and keep the red from dominating the room. Touches of gold and pale blue appear in the rosette centers. The overall effect is traditional and warm, easy to place with mahogany or walnut furniture, and forgiving of the traffic a room-size rug takes.

The back shows straight, regular rows with no pulling or waviness, the selvedges are wrapped tight in red, and the pile has been sheared to an even medium height that holds the detail of the small flower heads. Because it has never been on a floor, the wool still carries its full luster and the colors are at their strongest.
