7' x 9' Sarouk Design Oriental Rug | Navy Field, Rust Border | Lustrous Wool, Never Used

This 7' x 9' room-size rug is hand-knotted in India in the classic Sarouk manner, with a deep navy blue field carrying detached floral sprays and a wide rust burgundy border of rosettes. The wool is the reason to look twice: a silky, high-luster fleece that catches light differently from each end of the room, so the field shifts between ink navy and softer midnight as you walk around it. The pile is full and evenly clipped, the selvages are tight, the ivory fringe is hand-tied, and the rug has never been on a floor. Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the Sarouk formula that made the type famous in American homes: a field of detached flowering sprays, each one drawn separately and floated on open ground rather than tied into a continuous lattice. At the center sits a round rosette medallion built from curling acanthus leaves and a ring of small red blossoms, with a paired serrated leaf above and below it. Around it the weaver mirrors 4 large cream and gold boteh cartouches, 4 stepped flowering bushes with cascading blossom stems, and a pair of tall serrated leaves, sometimes called saz leaves, sweeping across the 4 corners. This is textbook all over floral rug drawing, which means the pattern reads well from any side and furniture can sit anywhere on it without cutting off a medallion. The main border runs a steady rhythm of round rosettes and 8 petal star flowers alternating with cross-shaped palmettes, flanked by a reciprocal sawtooth stripe and 2 narrow floral guard stripes in ivory and gold.

A Midnight Navy Field Framed in Rust Burgundy

The field is a saturated midnight navy, dark enough at the edges to look almost black in the corner photographs and clearly blue where light hits the pile straight on. Against it, the palette is deliberately warm: brick red and deep garnet blossoms, gold and butter cream boteh centers, chocolate brown outlines that give every motif a clean edge, and cool sage and olive green leaves that keep the whole thing from going too warm. A muted teal blue-green appears in the smaller star flowers and again in the border rosettes, which is the color that makes the design look older than it is. The main border is rust burgundy, a red with brown in it rather than a bright tomato, and it frames the navy in the way the best navy blue rugs should. Ivory guard stripes and an ivory fringe finish both ends and lift the contrast at the edges.

Made in India, on a cotton foundation, knotted entirely by hand. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving now happens, and this piece shows why: the knot count is even across the full 9 foot length, the horizontal lines of the border stay straight, and the curved vine work in the medallion is drawn without the stutter you see in coarser goods. The workshop chose a long-staple, high-luster wool and clipped the pile just low enough to keep the outlines crisp, which is what gives the field that silky sheen in the raking-light photographs.
