6'6" x 9'10" Sarouk Design Oriental Rug | Navy Field with Rose-Rust Floral Border | Lustrous Wool, Made in India

This is a hand-knotted Oriental rug made in India in the 2000's, woven in the classic Sarouk drawing on a midnight navy ground and finished in a lustrous wool that catches light differently depending on where you stand. At 6'6" x 9'10" it sits in the most useful room size there is, large enough to carry a seating group or a dining table and still show a clean margin of floor. The pile is thick and springy, the ends are even, the selvedges are tight, and the rug has never been put into service, so the wool still has its full original luster. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity identifying weave, materials and origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first gallery image was shot under different lighting than the rest and reads deeper and flatter than the rug does in person. The daylight close-ups are the truer reference: the border is a warm rose-rust rather than a dark brick, and the field is a clear midnight navy. Soft folds or shadows in the floor photos come from storage and handling, not from wear, fading or damage. They relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.

Design and Motifs

The Sarouk formula is built on detached flowering sprays rather than a continuous vine, and that is exactly what you get here. Across the navy field, leafy branches, rosette clusters and small blossom bouquets are set in mirrored pairs, each one drawn with its own stem and tiny serrated leaves so the field reads as a scattered garden instead of a repeating grid. A small lozenge medallion holds the center, two gold and turquoise cartouche halves meeting at an 8 petal rosette, with a slender pendant spike rising above and below it. Large curling vase and palmette forms anchor the top and bottom ends of the field. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a wide rose-rust main band of linked palmettes and navy rosette roundels, flanked by narrow floral meanders, a pale blue-green guard stripe and a fine reciprocal minor stripe, all closed by a plain navy outer edge and gold fringe. Among 7x10 rugs, this amount of border detail at this scale is uncommon.

The Color: Midnight Navy Against Rose-Rust

The field is a deep midnight navy, saturated and even, with just enough variation in the wool to keep it from looking printed. Against it the floral work is worked in olive gold, light celadon green, soft salmon, coral red, ivory and a few touches of true turquoise, so the drawing glows rather than shouts. The main border shifts the temperature completely: a warm rose-rust, closer to old brick washed with salmon than to tomato red, carrying gold palmettes, moss green leaves and ivory blossoms, with navy rosette medallions dropped in at the corners and midpoints for contrast. Pale blue-green guard stripes separate the two temperatures and keep the eye moving. The close-up of the folded pile shows how far the color stack goes, with up to 8 shades visible inside a single palmette. Buyers shopping navy blue rugs for a room with warm wood or leather will find this combination unusually easy to live with.

Sarouk Design, Woven in India

The Sarouk layout, detached floral sprays on a dark ground with a palmette border, became one of the most copied formal designs in the trade, and the best contemporary versions of it are now woven in India. India is where most of the world's good hand-knotted work is made today, and we say that without hedging: the workshops there have the loom capacity, the spinning and the dye control to produce a rug like this one at a level of finish that holds up to inspection. You can see it in the weave on the reverse, where the knotting is regular row to row with no drawing in at the ends, and in the clarity of the small motifs, which stay crisp because the knot count supports the design instead of fighting it. The wool is the other half of the story, long-staple and well scoured, which is what gives this pile its shine and the resilience to take real traffic for decades.
