This 6'6" x 9'10" rug is a disciplined, fully hand-knotted reading of the Tabriz Mahi drawing, executed in wool with silk worked into the highlights so the medallion and the finer outlines catch the light differently from the surrounding field. It is a brand new piece, never used, with a cotton foundation, a clean low pile that shows every knot, and hand-tied ivory fringe at both ends. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug, it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, the materials and the country of origin. Design and Motifs

Mahi means fish, and the name comes from the Herati unit that fills this field: a small rosette inside a diamond, flanked by 4 curved lanceolate leaves that look like fish circling the flower. That unit repeats in a strict diagonal lattice from selvedge to selvedge, hundreds of times over, which is exactly why the pattern is the hardest test of a weaver's consistency. At the center sits a lobed ivory medallion with a scalloped outline and a dark rosette core, extended top and bottom by 2 stepped pendants and echoed by softly drawn spandrels that curve into all 4 corners. The main border carries alternating palmettes and 8 petal rosettes on ivory, framed by camel and ivory guard stripes and a fine reciprocal minor band, so the eye is walked in from the edge to the medallion in clear steps.

A Ruby Burgundy Field Lit by Ivory and Green

The ground is a deep ruby burgundy, closer to wine than to tomato red, and it reads almost black where the pile lies away from the light. Against it the Herati lattice is picked out in ivory, soft camel, muted green, dusty rose and a chalky light blue, with black outlining that keeps each small motif crisp instead of letting the color blur together. The medallion and spandrels are ivory warmed by tan, and the inner medallion core drops back into dark green and burgundy so the center has depth rather than sitting flat. The main border is the same ivory, brightened by red palmettes and green rosette hearts, and the outer edge finishes in solid burgundy that frames the whole piece. It is a warm, traditional palette that sits comfortably on dark hardwood, pale stone or a light oak floor.
