9' x 11'6" Bokhara Oriental Rug | Beige Field with Gul Medallions | New, Never Used

This 9' x 11'6" Bokhara is a brand new, never used piece, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the classic Turkoman manner: a quiet camel beige ground carrying row after row of octagonal gul medallions, framed by a deep stack of narrow geometric borders. The wool has the dense, slightly velvety handle that good Bokhara weaving is known for, short enough to keep every outline crisp and heavy enough to sit flat under furniture. It is a true hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a machine made copy of one, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity recording the size, the materials, the design and the country of weaving.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The soft diagonal lines and shadows you can see across the field in several photos are fold marks from pallet storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.

Design and Motifs

The field is built from the gul, the octagonal tribal medallion sometimes called the elephant foot, repeated in tidy columns and rows across the whole ground. Each gul is quartered by a dark cross and filled with small hooked and comb-like devices, and between the rows sits a secondary motif shaped like a stepped cross with feathered finials, which keeps the grid from reading as flat repetition. This disciplined all over repeat design is finished with a remarkable border system: a wide outer band of diamond lattice, a panelled guard with alternating star rosettes and small prayer-arch cartouches, and several narrow stripes of dots, triangles and running hooks. Every line in the drawing is straight or stepped, which is exactly what you want from strictly geometric rug work, and the ivory fringe at each end finishes the piece cleanly.

A Camel Beige Field with Charcoal, Brown and Gold

The ground is a warm camel beige, closer to sand than to white, and it shifts gently between a pale oatmeal tone and a deeper tan depending on where the light falls across the pile. The guls are outlined in a near black charcoal that photographs as true black in close-up and softens to a dark brown-black across the room. Inside the medallions the weaver has used muted gold and khaki, a soft olive-leaning yellow that catches the light, along with small touches of pale ivory that lift the centers. The borders repeat the same restricted set: black lattice on beige, ivory stars, gold rosette hearts. There is no red and no blue anywhere in the piece, which is unusual for a Bokhara and makes this a genuinely neutral rug, easy to place against grey stone, wood flooring, cream walls or leather furniture.

Bokhara Weaving in Pakistan

The Bokhara design traveled south from the Turkoman tribes of Central Asia and took root in the weaving centers of Pakistan, where workshops around Lahore have produced it to a consistently high standard for generations. The weave here shows that training: straight selvages, even rows, guls that line up column to column across more than 11 feet of length, and a short clipped pile that holds the fine black outlines without blurring. Wool on a cotton foundation gives the rug weight and stability, so it lies flat and takes traffic well in a dining room or a busy family space. Made in Pakistan, never used and in perfect condition, it is one of the most usable pieces in our 9x12 Oriental rugs selection for anyone who wants tribal drawing without strong color.
