11'3" x 15'3" Bokhara Oriental Rug | Beige Field with Repeating Guls | Hand-Knotted Wool, Never Used

This is a big, quiet, beautifully disciplined piece: a hand-knotted Bokhara measuring 11'3" x 15'3", woven in Pakistan in soft wool on a cotton foundation and never put down in a home. The whole field is one continuous repeat of octagonal guls on a warm camel beige ground, which is exactly why a rug this size reads as calm rather than busy. It is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a machine-made lookalike, and like every piece we sell it ships with a certificate of authenticity. At 135" by 183" it belongs in the category of true oversize area rugs, the kind that anchors a whole great room instead of floating in the middle of it.

Design and Motifs

The field carries the classic Turkoman gul: rounded octagons quartered into four sections, each quarter filled with hooked and stepped devices in rust red, ivory and black. They run 9 columns across the width and march the full length of the rug in an even all over pattern, separated by slender cross shaped sprays that fill the space between rows without crowding it. The border system is where the weaver showed off: at least 7 concentric bands, including a row of small framed rosettes, repeated arrowhead and comb bands, fine reciprocal minor guards, and a wide kilim style end panel of dark diamonds and latch hooks at both ends. The selvages are clean and the ivory cotton fringe at both ends is full and evenly tied. There is no medallion and no open ground, which is deliberate in this tradition; the drawing is meant to be read up close and to disappear into rhythm from across the room.

Color Palette

The ground is a warm camel beige, closer to sand than to gold, and it holds a soft sheen where the wool catches light. Sitting on it are guls outlined in a near black charcoal brown, filled with a muted rust red that reads slightly salmon in daylight and deepens to brick under lamps. Ivory does the fine work: the small hooks inside each gul, the tiny rosette hearts in the border panels, and the thin reciprocal lines that separate one guard band from the next. A pale grey green appears sparingly in the border arrowheads and gives the palette a cooler note that keeps the rust from going orange. The overall effect is a neutral rug with warmth in it, which is why this coloring works over pale oak, travertine and grey tile alike, and why it sits comfortably with both brown leather and off white upholstery.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Bokhara is a Turkoman design, and Pakistan has been its best modern home for decades; the workshops around Lahore built their reputation on exactly this pattern, worked in soft, high sheen wool on a cotton foundation. Weaving an 11'3" x 15'3" piece on a single loom is a different job from weaving a 6x9: the repeat has to stay true across 135 inches of width for the entire length, and on this rug it does, with straight borders, square corners and no drift in the gul rows. The reverse shot shows a tight, regular knot with the pattern reading clearly from the back, and the pile is clipped low and even so the outlines stay crisp. The wool is noticeably soft underfoot for a rug of this weight, and being brand new it has its full pile height, which on a piece this large means decades of use still ahead of it.
