Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over composition of detached floral sprays rather than a single centered medallion, which is the classic Sarouk arrangement and the reason it works so well at oversize proportions: the eye never hunts for a center that furniture would cover anyway. Large fan-shaped bouquets alternate with tall vase-and-vine groupings, each one built from curling stems, feathered serrated leaves, open rosettes and long ivory boteh forms that arc outward like plumes. Look at the detail shot and you can see how the drawing is handled: a small dark rosette at the heart of each cluster, paired ivory cypress leaves outlined in navy above and below, and thin vine work spinning off in every direction to fill the ground without crowding it. The border is a deep near-black navy band carrying a continuous turning vine of palmettes and lotus heads, held between sage green and ivory guard stripes, with a final outer band of small crosses and rosettes that finishes the edge cleanly against the burgundy.

Burgundy, Ivory and Gold Across 317 Square Feet

The ground is a deep burgundy that reads closer to oxblood or wine than to a bright red, and because the pile is dense it shifts tone as you walk around it, going darker into the nap and warmer with the light behind you. Against that ground the floral work is carried almost entirely in ivory, straw gold and pale honey, with soft sage green in the leaves and small touches of slate blue and dark plum in the flower heads for depth. The 4 corners and the full perimeter are anchored by the near-black navy border, which frames the burgundy the way a dark mat frames a painting and gives the rug a definite edge in a large open room. The fringe is natural ivory cotton. It is a warm, saturated, traditional palette: burgundy and navy for weight, ivory and gold for the drawing, and just enough green to keep the botanical work from reading as one flat color.
