13'11" x 23'9" Oversize Oriental Rug | Sarouk All Over Floral Design | Made in India, Never Used

At 13'11" x 23'9" this is a true palace format piece, a hand-knotted wool rug built to cover a room that normal area rugs simply cannot handle: a long formal living room, a banquet-length dining room, a lobby or a great room in an open plan house. The weaver held a single all over floral scheme across nearly 24 feet of length without letting the drawing drift, which is the hard part of a rug this size. The pile is full and evenly clipped, the selvages are tight, and the piece has never been laid in a home, so the wool still carries its original luster. It ships with a certificate of authenticity, and despite the weight and the freight-size footprint it ships free to all 50 states.

Design and Motifs

The field is a classic Sarouk composition, an all over floral design with no central medallion, so the pattern reads evenly no matter where furniture lands on it. Curling vine scrolls set out a soft lattice across the ground and fill it with large round rosettes, lotus palmettes, tulip heads and heart-shaped cartouches, each flanked by long serrated leaves. Look closely at image 6 and you can see how the drawing alternates: a big frontal rosette, then a shield-shaped palmette, then a small dark eight petal flower, repeating on a staggered grid rather than a rigid one. The main border runs on a black ground with linked palmettes and rosettes joined by a continuous vine, framed on both sides by narrow ivory guard stripes carrying a running leaf and heart motif, and finished with a plain red outer band that keeps the whole composition contained.

Colors in the Wool

The ground is a deep madder red that photographs slightly brighter under direct light in the angled shot and settles into a richer wine tone in the flat overhead views. Against it the ornament is drawn in ivory and cream, warm camel and antique gold, muted sage green in the leaves, and slate blue in the smaller flower heads, with near-black centers punctuating the rosettes. The black main border is genuinely dark, closer to a charcoal black than a navy, and that depth is what makes the ivory guard stripes snap and the red field read as warm rather than heavy. There is a natural abrash, a gentle variation in the red, visible along the length in the wider photographs, which is the mark of hand-dyed wool rather than a flaw. In a room with warm hardwood or a cream stone floor the palette leans traditional and formal, while the greens and blues give it enough complexity to sit with contemporary furniture.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and the workshops there handle the Sarouk idiom with real fluency. The back-of-corner photograph shows the evidence: a tight, regular knot on a cotton foundation, the pattern legible from the reverse, and straight, disciplined side finishes along a 23'9" run. Weaving a rug this long demands a purpose-built loom, months of coordinated work on the bench, and constant correction so the width stays true from one end to the other.
