Design and Motifs

The main border is broad and formal, set with alternating large flowerheads and paired leaf sprays connected by a continuous vine, and it is framed on both sides by narrow guard bands of running floral meander. The ground is chiffon white, a soft warm off-white with a faint cream cast rather than a cold bright white, and it behaves beautifully under both daylight and lamplight. Against it the drawing is worked in a restrained palette: charcoal and near-black outlines that define every vine, muted olive and sage in the leafwork, soft gold and honey in the palmette centers, and small touches of brick red, rust and dusty rose in the flowerheads that give the field its warmth. The main border reverses the scheme entirely, laying the same floral vocabulary in ivory, olive, gold and rose over a deep black ground, so the border frames the rug the way a dark mat frames a print.
