8'6" x 11'6" Indian Oriental Rug | Sarouk All-Over Floral Design | Burgundy & Black | Never Used

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted wool rug in the classic Sarouk drawing, woven in India on a cotton foundation and measuring 8'6" x 11'6". The pile is a clean, even wool with a soft hand and a quiet sheen, and the drawing is unusually disciplined for an all-over floral at this scale: every flowering stem resolves cleanly against the open burgundy ground instead of crowding it. At roughly 9x12 rug size it covers a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table with chairs pulled out. Ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, with the weave, material and measurements as listed above.

Design and Motifs

The field carries no medallion. Instead it is laid out as rows of upright flowering plants, each rising from a small base on a thin stem into serrated leaves, open blossoms and tight buds, with free floating sprays and rosettes filling the spaces between. At the center of the field two mirrored palmettes curl outward from a small 8 petal rosette, forming the only concentrated accent in the whole ground, and the same twin palmette idea repeats on a smaller scale as the eye travels toward the ends. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a narrow outer stripe, a beige reciprocal vine, the wide black main border of large 8 petal rosettes alternating with lobed palmettes on a connecting vine, then an inner beige vine stripe and a thin guard line. Corners are resolved rather than cut off, with the border rosette turning the angle properly, which is the tell of a carefully drawn cartoon. This Sarouk design tradition is built on exactly this balance of botanical repeat and heavy floral border.

Colors in Detail

The ground is a deep burgundy, a true wine red with a cool plum undertone rather than a brick or orange red, and it stays even across the full length with only the natural variation good wool gives when the light moves across it. Against it the floral work is drawn in a warm salmon beige that shifts between peach and soft apricot depending on the angle, with the lightest blossoms lifting almost to ivory and a few leaves cooling toward a pale sand. The main border is a blue black, dense enough to read as black in a room but showing its navy depth in close light, and it throws the beige rosettes forward hard. Fine outlining in near black and a dark pine green defines the leaf edges and the small quatrefoil accents, keeping the pattern crisp. The selvage is finished in burgundy and the fringe is a clean undyed ivory. Overall it is a warm, formal palette, 3 colors doing nearly all the work, which makes it easy to place against wood floors, cream walls or darker cabinetry.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving now happens. The best Indian workshops weave to tight, consistent standards: a well tensioned cotton warp, even weft beat-down and a clean, lanolin-rich wool pile that wears in rather than out. You can see it in the back of this piece, where the knot rows run straight and the pattern reads almost as clearly from the reverse as from the face, and in the pile depth along the folded edge, which is cut level across the entire rug. The wool takes dye deeply and holds the burgundy and salmon tones without the chalky flatness of machine-made goods. For a buyer who wants the formal all-over floral look in a large size, in perfect unused condition and on a budget that a genuine antique would not reach, this is the honest answer: real hand knotting, real wool, drawn by someone who understood the design.
