7'9" x 9'9" Indian Area Rug | Sarouk Floral Design | Black Blue, Never Used
At 7'9" x 9'9" this is a genuine room-size piece, hand-knotted in India with a wool pile on a cotton foundation and drawn in the classic Sarouk floral manner. The field reads nearly ink-black from across a room and resolves into a deep blue once daylight hits it, and it is filled from edge to edge with rose, salmon and powder blue flowering vines around one soft-toned central medallion. The pile stands full and even, the ends and sides are untouched, and the hand-tied fringe is still crisp, so this rug has never been laid on a floor. It ships with our certificate of authenticity recording the weave, materials, measurements and origin, and the proportions put it squarely in the most asked-for shelf we stock, 8x10 Oriental rugs.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is an all-over floral composition with a quiet center: a lobed medallion built from stacked rosettes and a small 8 petal flower at its heart, surrounded by curling serrated leaves that spiral away in pairs. Around it the field carries large palmettes, boteh paisleys, multi-flower sprays and thin vine stems that never quite repeat, so the eye keeps finding a new blossom. A row of flowering vases and upright bouquets runs along the inner edge of the field just inside the frame, a detail you can see clearly in the close images. The border is a triple arrangement: a wide main band of lotus palmettes, pendant rosettes and ivory cartouche-like medallions, a salmon inner band of paired flower heads, and narrow ivory and sage guard stripes that keep the whole frame from going soft. The outer edge is finished in dark navy, which closes the pattern off cleanly against a light floor.
A Black Blue Field Against Powder Blue and Pink
Color is the real argument for this rug. The ground is a black blue so saturated that in the overhead shots it looks simply black, while the angled and close photographs show the blue cast in the wool. Against that darkness the ornament is deliberately pale: dusty rose, salmon, antique pink and a chalky powder blue, with ivory outlines picking out the petal tips and small burgundy dots and sage green leaves adding warmth in the smallest details. The main border flips the balance, setting a light slate and powder blue ground under salmon palmettes so the frame glows while the field stays deep. If you have been working through navy and blue area rugs and finding most of them too bright, this one sits at the dark, dusty end of the range and reads as a true anchor piece under cream or grey upholstery.
Woven in India in the Sarouk Floral Tradition
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug shows why. The back is even and tight, the knot rows are regular across the full 93" width, and the drawing holds its curves through the vine scrolls and petal edges, which only happens when the weaver has enough knots to work with. The wool is well spun and takes dye cleanly, giving the pile a soft sheen in the raking light shots rather than a flat matte surface, and the cotton foundation keeps the piece lying flat without the stiffness of a heavy village weave. If you are weighing it against other options, our guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug explains exactly where a piece like this sits. Priced as new, never-used Indian work in a format that normally commands far more, it is a lot of hand-knotted rug for the money.
