A brand new, never used room-size piece woven by hand in Jaipur, this 9'9" x 14' rug follows the classic Kashan drawing: a deep burgundy field filled edge to edge with flowering vines, framed by a wide black border. The wool is the reason to look twice. It is a long, lustrous fleece that takes dye deeply and already carries a soft sheen straight off the loom, and the pile is cut low enough that the fine outlines of every palmette stay crisp. The cotton foundation is firm and the rug lies flat and square, with hand-tied fringe at both ends and a burgundy wrapped selvage. Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over composition with no central medallion, so the pattern reads evenly no matter where furniture lands on it. Thin arabesque vines travel the full length of the rug and carry large fanned palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves and small cypress-like sprays, with a few larger shield-shaped cartouches spaced along the center line to give the eye a resting point. Two slender pendant lamps appear at the top and bottom of the field, a detail lifted straight from classical Kashan drawing. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a black main border of alternating sunburst rosettes and curling split-leaf vines, a brown reciprocal band, a sage green floral guard on each side and a narrow diamond meander at the outer edge, all finished in plain burgundy before the fringe. The corners are resolved cleanly, which is a fair test of a weaver's skill on a rug this wide.

Burgundy, Black and Sage Green

The ground is a deep burgundy that shifts with the nap, reading close to black cherry where the pile lies away from the light and a warmer wine red where it lies toward it. Against that, the drawing works in a muted, almost antique palette: olive and sage green leaves, soft gold and butter yellow blossoms, ivory, rust orange, taupe brown and small touches of pale blue grey inside the larger flower heads. The main border is a dense true black, which is what gives the rug its weight and keeps the busy field contained. Between the black and the burgundy, the sage green guard stripes do the quiet work, lightening the frame so the rug never turns heavy. In a room with warm wood, brass or cream upholstery, the golds pick up; against cooler greys, the green and blue grey notes come forward instead.
