8'4" x 11'5" Chobi Ziegler Rug | Burgundy All Over Floral | Fine Ghazni Wool, Brand New
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug measuring 8'4" x 11'5", woven in Pakistan in the Chobi Ziegler manner with a pile of fine Ghazni wool on a cotton foundation. The wool is the reason to look twice: Ghazni fleece takes dye with a soft sheen, and in the close photographs you can see the pile shift from deep wine to a lit garnet as the light moves across it. The drawing is a classic all over floral repeat, burgundy field, wide ivory to tan main border, gold guard stripes on both sides of it. At this scale it works as a room-defining floor piece rather than an accent, and it sits comfortably in the practical 8x11 area rug footprint that most dining and living spaces are built around. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its measurements, materials and origin.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all over floral design with no central medallion, built on a thin scrolling vine that links three sizes of bloom: large shield-shaped palmettes, flat round rosettes with 8 to 12 petals, and small 4 petal buds tucked into the spaces between. Long serrated leaves lean out from the vine at regular intervals and give the repeat its rhythm. Because there is no medallion, the pattern reads the same from every seat in the room, which is exactly why this layout suits a long dining table or a seating group with sofas facing each other. The main border carries oversized fan-shaped palmettes alternating with feathery leaf sprays, and the corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif, which is a fair indicator of a well-drawn cartoon. Two narrow gold guard borders and a slim outer stripe of small rosettes frame the whole composition, and the ends finish in hand-tied ivory fringe.
The Burgundy Field and Its Ivory Frame
The field is a deep, saturated burgundy, closer to bordeaux than to fire red, and it darkens to near black-cherry in the shadow of the pile while lifting to a clear wine tone where the light hits the face. Against it the flowers are worked in tan, pale gold, cream and buttery beige, with quiet secondary notes of sage green, soft olive, dusty rose and a pale powder blue that shows up in the small rosette centers and in the leaf tips. The main border shifts the balance completely: an ivory to light tan ground that lightens the whole rug at its edges, with the border palmettes filled in gold and outlined in the same burgundy as the field so the two halves of the palette stay tied together. The guard stripes are a warmer honey gold with tiny red and blue flowerheads set along them. Overall it is a warm, low-contrast scheme that carries well with dark wood, brass and cream upholstery.
Woven in Pakistan: the Ziegler Tradition and the Weave
The Ziegler design goes back to a 19th century European firm that commissioned Sultanabad weavings with softened, open floral drawing for Western rooms, and the Peshawar workshops of northwest Pakistan have carried that vocabulary forward for decades using highland Ghazni wool. This is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, knot by knot on a cotton warp, not a tufted or machine-made reproduction: the reverse shown in the photographs has a clear, legible knot grid with the pattern reading as sharply from the back as from the face, and the selvages are wrapped tight in matching burgundy. The pile is cut to a medium height, dense enough to stand up to a dining chair being pushed back twice a day, and the Ghazni fleece has the long staple and natural lanolin that make a floor rug shrug off traffic instead of matting. Being brand new and never used, it arrives with its full pile and full color, ready to be broken in by the room it lands in.
