The field reads deep burgundy, drifting toward aubergine where the light catches the pile, and it is covered corner to corner with ivory, sage and gold palmettes on thin scrolling vines. A wide soft green border holds the whole thing together. The rug is brand new and never used, knotted on a cotton foundation with a fine highland wool pile, and it arrives with a certificate of authenticity. Design and Motifs

The layout is an all-over floral in the Ziegler idiom, the large-scale revival drawing that was developed for big Western rooms rather than for a single focal point. A broad sage rosette sits at the center, built from overlapping petals around a small dark star, but it does not dominate: the vine work simply keeps going past it in every direction. Above and below the center run paired teardrop palmettes with red and cream hearts, flanked by split serrated leaves that curl back on themselves, and the whole field is stitched together by fine hairline vines that carry small buds and open blossoms. The main border repeats a large flowering palmette, alternating burgundy leaves against the green ground with ivory and rose blooms between them, and it is fenced on both sides by narrow salmon guard stripes carrying a repeating meander of small flowers. Because the pattern is continuous rather than medallion-centered, a sofa, a dining table or a pair of armchairs can sit anywhere on it without cutting the design in half, which is exactly what you want at 19'6" long.

The Burgundy, Sage and Gold Palette

Color is the reason to buy this one. The ground is a wine burgundy with a plum undertone, and it moves: in the close-up shots you can see gentle abrash running in horizontal bands where one dye lot of hand-spun wool met the next, so the field breathes instead of sitting flat. Against it the drawing is worked in celadon and sage green, antique gold, butter cream and clean ivory, with small accents of coral, carmine red and pale blue dropped into the flower centers. The main border shifts to a soft grey green, slightly cooler than the greens in the field, and the salmon guard stripes warm it back up at the edge. Nothing in the palette is loud. The overall contrast is low, which is typical of a carefully washed Chobi, and the practical result is a floor that reads as a rich muted plum from standing height and only reveals the gold and green detail when you are close. Woven in Pakistan: Ghazni Wool and Ziegler Chobi Quality

Ziegler Chobi weaving is now concentrated in Pakistan, where workshops in and around Peshawar produce some of the best hand-knotted work being made anywhere today. The pile here is fine highland Ghazni wool, a long-staple fleece with a high lanolin content that takes natural dye deeply and holds a soft sheen instead of going chalky. The wool is hand-spun, which is what creates the subtle striation across the field, and the finished rug is washed to settle the colors into the muted register you see in the photographs. The back photograph tells you what you need to know about the weave: tight, even rows of knots, a straight consistent line from selvage to selvage, and no crowding or slack across a span of more than 14 feet, which is difficult to hold on a loom this wide. Wefted on cotton and finished with hand-overcast edges and a modest fringe, this is a durable floor piece rather than a delicate one, and it belongs in the conversation with any high-end Oriental rug of this scale.
