10' x 14' Afghan Ziegler Chobi Rug | Burgundy All Over Floral Design | Fine Ghazni Wool

This is a new, never used Ziegler Chobi hand-knotted in fine Ghazni wool on a cotton foundation, and it is the kind of piece that carries a large room without shouting. The deep burgundy field runs the full 10' x 14' with an all-over vine and palmette drawing, framed by a wide camel gold border that lifts the red rather than fighting it. The wool has the slight sheen and soft handle that handspun Ghazni fleece gives you, and the abrash across the field shifts gently from wine to a darker oxblood as the light moves. Every rug leaves us with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, the fiber and the origin. If you are comparing 10 x 14 hand-knotted rugs for a formal room, this one sits at the balanced end: traditional drawing, grown-up color, no medallion to lock your furniture into a single arrangement.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all over floral composition, with no central medallion. Thin sage and olive vines travel the length of the rug and open into large lobed palmettes, multi petal rosettes and serrated acanthus leaves, with smaller blossoms and buds filling the ground between them. The drawing is generous in scale, so the pattern reads clearly from standing height instead of dissolving into busy texture. The main border carries its own vine, alternating rust palmettes with shield shaped cartouches on a camel ground, and is bracketed by two narrow guard stripes of running scroll and small four petal flowers. Corners resolve cleanly, the field outline is drawn with a fine burgundy line, and the selvages are wrapped in matching red wool as seen in the close photographs.

A Burgundy Field Under a Camel Gold Border

Color is what sells this rug in person. The field is a deep burgundy, closer to wine and oxblood than to bright red, with soft horizontal abrash banding that proves the yarn was dyed in small lots. Against it the flowerheads work through a warm range: butter gold, apricot, burnt rust, a dusty pink, pale cream and a muted sage green, with occasional charcoal and slate blue centers that keep the palette from turning sweet. The wide border shifts from camel to a light honey gold, and the outer guard stripe is nearly ivory, which is what gives the rug its bright frame in the overhead photograph. The cotton fringe finishes cream at both ends. In a room with cream walls, walnut furniture or dark hardwood, the burgundy grounds the space while the gold border keeps it from feeling heavy.

Weaving Quality and Afghan Origin

Ziegler Chobi weaving is done by Afghan workshop weavers, many of them working in and around Peshawar, and it is some of the most consistent hand-knotted production being made today. Chobi means the dyes are drawn from plant sources, and the wool is Ghazni fleece, prized because it is long stapled, lustrous and tough enough to take decades of traffic. Knotting here is even from end to end, the pile is clipped at a medium height that shows the drawing without flattening it, and the back photograph shows a tight, regular grid on a cotton foundation. This is a genuine Oriental rug, knot by knot by hand, and it arrives brand new with full pile and no wear at all.
