8' x 10' Zigler Oriental Rug | Black Field with Ivory Border | Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India

Laid flat, this 8' x 10' Zigler rug reads almost like lacquer: a deep black ground carrying an all-over floral trellis in cream, sage green and rust, then a wide ivory border that lifts the whole thing off the floor. It is hand-knotted entirely by hand in wool at a 3/8" pile over a cotton foundation, and it is brand new, with tight selvedges and bright white fringe on a piece that has only ever been rolled and stored. Every rug leaves us with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a machine-made or tufted reproduction. In the most useful footprint we sell, it sits comfortably with the other 8x10 area rugs that anchor a full seating group or a 6 seat table.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design with no central medallion, so the drawing repeats evenly and the rug can be turned or shifted in a room without breaking the composition. Thin wheat-gold vines run corner to corner and tie together three recurring shapes: broad 8 petal rosettes with small burgundy centers, large teardrop palmettes drawn in cream and sage with rust hearts, and serrated curling leaves that arc back on themselves. Between them sit tiny buds and star flowers that keep the black ground from opening into empty space. The wide ivory main border alternates round rosette medallions with upright leafy palmettes and rust-outlined cartouches, and it is held on both sides by a narrow gold guard stripe of scrolling vine and pinhead flowers. The corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning rather than colliding, which is a good tell on a hand-knotted piece of this scale.

A Black Field Framed in Ivory, Sage and Rust

The ground is a dense, saturated black that shows a faint indigo cast where the light rakes across the pile, and that darkness is what gives the flowers their glow. Against it the palette is deliberately soft: antique cream and buttermilk in the larger blossoms, a muted sage green that turns almost celadon in the close-up shots, warm terracotta rust in the palmette centers and in the outlines of the border cartouches, plus small hits of deep burgundy at the flower hearts. The vine work is a wheat gold that carries the eye. The border shifts the balance completely, ivory with taupe, olive and rust figures, so the rug frames itself and stays legible in a dark room. It is a black and ivory scheme that works over pale oak, wide plank walnut, or a neutral broadloom, and it answers to charcoal, camel, brass and olive in the furniture.

This rug is made in India, and that is a recommendation rather than a caveat. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, with experienced workshops, well spun and well washed wool, and the kind of quality control that produces a rug this square and this even across 8 feet of width. The Zigler style itself is a workshop drawing tradition built around large-scale all-over florals and a restrained, decorator-friendly palette, and it suits a 3/8" wool pile, which is heavy enough to take traffic and hold the pattern crisp without burying the fine vine lines. The wool takes dye deeply, the black stays black rather than going gray, and the pile has a low sheen that reads richer in person than in a photograph. Being brand new and never used, the full pile height is still there, so the buyer gets the entire service life of the rug.
