This is a brand new hand-knotted Ziegler in one of the most useful room sizes we stock, and the drawing is far better than the usual production piece. The pile is 100% wool on a cotton foundation, the handle is dense and heavy for its thickness, and the colors have that slightly softened, vegetable-dye look the Ziegler style is built around. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries a full all over design of thick rust vine stems that split, arc and rejoin to form large lozenge compartments, each one anchored by a broad palmette and flanked by long serrated leaves. Between the vines the weaver has filled the ground with small 5 petal blossoms, tiny cypress and tulip sprigs, and scattered leaf clusters, so the field never looks empty even at this scale. The pattern repeats on a vertical axis, which is why the layout reads balanced from either end of the room. The wide ivory main border is the showpiece: alternating angular red and gold palmettes set between coiled cloudband cartouches, outlined in dark navy and separated from the field by a narrow green vine guard stripe on both sides. The corners resolve cleanly, a detail worth checking on any large rug and one this weaver got right on all 4 corners.

The Dark Blue, Ivory and Rust Palette

The field is a deep indigo dark blue, not flat black, and under direct light the wool opens up into a slightly mottled blue with genuine depth. Against it the vines are drawn in a brick rust red, the palmettes in the same rust filled with gold ochre and pale cream, and the small leaves in a muted sage and olive green. Ivory blossoms and buds do most of the lifting, giving the eye bright points across the whole field. The main border shifts to a soft sandy ivory, almost oatmeal in the close photographs, which throws the rust and gold palmettes forward and keeps the dark field from feeling heavy. Small touches of brown and dusty rose appear in the leaf tips. It is a palette that sits well with wood tones, brass, warm whites and leather, and the dark ground is forgiving in a room that sees real traffic.

Ziegler Weaving Quality, Made in India

The Ziegler name goes back to a European firm that commissioned Persian village weavers in the Sultanabad region during the 1880s to produce large scale, open floral carpets for Western houses, and that drawing vocabulary is what this rug follows. It is woven in India, and that is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made: the spinning, the dyeing and the finishing on this piece are all of a high standard, which you can see in the level shear, the straight selvedges and the tidy, even knotting on the back. Read honestly as an Oriental rug rather than a Persian one, it delivers a great deal of hand-knotted wool for the money. The pile is full and unused, with no wear, no repairs and no fading anywhere on the surface.
