6'7" x 10' Ziegler Oriental Rug | Ivory Allover Floral Palmettes | Wool Pile, Made in India
This 6'7" x 10' rug is a Ziegler drawing done the way it should be done: an open ivory field, generous spacing between the flower heads, and nothing crowded into the corners. It is hand-knotted knot by knot in wool on a cotton foundation, with a medium pile cut high enough to hold the soft sheen you can see where the rug is rolled back. At 79" x 120" it sits comfortably under a sofa and two chairs with the front legs on the rug, which is exactly why the 7x10 size keeps selling faster than anything else in a neutral palette. The rug is new, never used, in excellent condition, and ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true allover floral layout with no central medallion. Staggered rows alternate between large 8 petal rosettes, each with a small shaded flower in the center, and upright split palmettes with curling leaf arms. A thin vine scroll links the whole field together, looping into lobed cartouche shapes between the big blossoms, and the gaps are filled with small boteh teardrops, 5 petal buds, serrated leaves and single stemmed flower sprays. The 4 corners are properly resolved rather than cut off mid motif. Five borders frame the composition: a wide main band of palmettes and leafy meander, two narrow floral stripes, and a pair of tiny green and rust guard stripes that pull the whole edge tight. Both ends finish with hand-tied fringe and the sides are flat, straight selvages.
The Ivory and Rust Color Palette
The ground is ivory moving through cream into warm beige and tan, with gentle horizontal striation across the open areas that shows the wool was dyed in small lots rather than flooded with one flat tone. Against that, the drawing works in a narrow warm range: antique gold and apricot palmettes, rust and terracotta outlines on the vine, deep burgundy and brick rosettes, and shaded rose brown petals that read almost mauve in raking light. The accents do the rest of the work, soft olive and sage green leaves, slate blue and teal pinpoints inside the flower centers, and a few small ivory squares and florets that keep the dark rosettes from sitting heavy. It is a quiet rug overall, and one of the safer buys among beige and ivory rugs if you are matching oak floors, linen upholstery and warm leather.
Made in India: Weave and Workshop Quality
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is produced today, and this piece is a fair example of why. The Ziegler pattern family was developed in the late 19th century by export workshops drawing softly colored, open field designs for Western rooms, and Indian ateliers have carried that vocabulary forward with hand-spun wool and natural looking dye lots. The back photo shows the knotting: even rows, consistent tension, no bowing, crisp definition on the fine vine lines, which is what lets the drawing stay legible at this scale. The wool itself is springy and lanolin rich, so the pile recovers after furniture and foot traffic rather than matting flat. If you are weighing this against a city workshop piece, our guide on what actually separates an Oriental rug from its neighbors is the place to start.
