6'7" x 10' Chobi Peshawar Ziegler Rug | Ivory Field, Coral Rust Border | Brand New Wool Pile
This 6'7" x 10' Chobi Peshawar is the restrained kind of floor piece that settles a room instead of shouting at it. The field reads as a warm unbleached ivory, hand-knotted in soft hand-spun wool clipped to a 5/16" pile, and the drawing is classic Ziegler: a loose vine scrolling edge to edge through large palmettes and serrated leaves in tan, faded brick and dusty olive. A coral rust main border wraps all 4 sides and supplies the only strong contrast in the piece. It is brand new and never used, with straight selvages, tight ivory fringe and a clean cotton back, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity identifying it as a hand-knotted Oriental rug. The proportions are the most useful in the house: a true 7x10 rug footprint that sits under a sofa and 2 chairs with room to spare.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. The weaver has drawn an all-over floral design built on a single thin vine that wanders the length of the field, throwing off broad shield palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, curled cloud-band leaves and small tulip forms as it goes. Two larger cartouche-shaped palmettes mark the long axis, one toward each end, which gives the eye an anchor without closing the pattern off. The main border runs a repeating palmette flanked by big feathered leaves, and it is held between narrow guard stripes of tiny rosettes and stems on a tan ground, with a plain ivory outer band at the edge. Corner resolution is handled honestly in the village manner, with the border pattern turning the corner rather than being forced into a perfect mitre, which is exactly what you want to see on a hand-knotted piece of this type.
Color: Ivory, Coral Rust and Dusty Olive
The palette is the whole argument for this rug. The ground is a creamy ivory that shifts toward oatmeal and light camel as the light moves across the pile, with gentle horizontal striation from the hand-spun yarn rather than any single flat tone. Over it the florals are worked in soft tan, mushroom, café brown and a greyed sage that cools the warmth down, with small hearts of faded brick and terracotta picked out at the center of the rosettes. The border is a muted coral rust, closer to old terracotta than to true red, and the cream and sage palmettes sitting on it keep it from going heavy. In a room with oak floors, grey or linen upholstery and sage accents it disappears into the scheme, which is why collectors of ivory and beige rugs keep coming back to this colorway.
Peshawar Weaving and Build Quality
Chobi rugs are woven in and around Peshawar in northwest Pakistan, where workshops revived the 19th century Ziegler and Sultanabad drawing style using hand-spun wool and a deliberately softened, sun-washed palette. The wool is the point: highland fleece, spun by hand so the yarn takes dye unevenly, which is what produces the subtle banding visible across this ivory field. The rug is knotted on a cotton foundation, as the clean reverse in the photographs shows, with an even knot count across the width and no pull or waviness along the sides. The pile is clipped low at 5/16", so the drawing stays legible and the piece sits flat under furniture, while the dense knotting gives it the weight to handle a main living space for decades.
