Design and Motifs

Thin brown vine stems arc across the ivory ground in long lazy curves, carrying open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, small 4 petal buds and heavily serrated acanthus leaves that lean over the stems like ferns. At the top and bottom you can see paired scrolling cloud-band cartouches in coral outline, a detail the weaver uses to close the field before it meets the border. The main border is drawn on a coral ground with large cream palmettes alternating with reversed leaves and hooked vine, flanked by narrow guard stripes of chained rosettes and tiny 4 square blocks in brick and sage. The corners are resolved cleanly on all 4 sides, with the border pattern turning properly instead of being cut off, which is a mark of a well-drawn cartoon.
