11'10" x 15'10" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Ziegler All-Over Floral | Coral Red & Ivory Handspun Wool

At 11'10" x 15'10" this Chobi Peshawar covers a full great room, a long dining table with chairs pulled out, or an open-plan living area from wall to wall, which is exactly the job oversize rugs in this class are woven for. It is hand-knotted in handspun wool on a cotton foundation, with a low 5/16" pile that lets the drawing stay crisp and lets doors and chair legs pass without catching. The field is a soft coral red, faded in the intentional Chobi manner, and the wide ivory border wraps it in cream, gold and quiet grey green. It is brand new and has never been used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weavers ran a large-scale all-over floral design across the whole field: broad fan palmettes, round 8 petal rosettes, stepped lozenge blossoms and serrated acanthus leaves, all strung on thin curling vines that repeat in mirrored pairs up the length of the rug. The scale is generous, so from standing height you read the rug as an open, airy pattern rather than a busy one, while up close each blossom has 3 or 4 shades worked into it. The main ivory border carries its own procession of palmettes and split leaves, turning cleanly at all 4 corners, and it is framed by narrow gold and floral guard stripes on both sides. The drawing is the classic Ziegler idiom: soft, slightly loose, more garden than geometry.

Coral Red and Ivory Color Palette

The field reads as a muted coral red, somewhere between terracotta and dusty salmon, and the handspun yarn gives it a fine horizontal striation so the ground breathes rather than sitting flat. Against it the motifs are drawn in ivory, bone and cream, warmed by olive gold and old brass, with soft grey and grey green leaves that keep the palette from turning sweet. A few blossoms hold pale peach and buff centers. The border is a light ivory ground with cocoa brown and rust leafwork, edged in a mustard gold guard stripe that echoes the gold in the field, and the outer selvedge returns to coral so the rug is contained by its own field color. Photographed in different light the ground shifts from apricot to brick, which is normal for naturally dyed handspun wool and part of why these pieces sit so easily with wood floors, stone, linen and warm neutral walls.

Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition

Peshawar in northern Pakistan is where the Chobi, meaning wood-colored, style is woven, and it is one of the few places still producing hand-knotted room-size work at this scale and standard. The wool is handspun rather than machine spun, which is why the pile takes dye unevenly in the best sense and why the surface has that slight luster you can see in the close-up photographs. The Ziegler drawing is a 19th century workshop style built around large botanical repeats and soft coloring, revived here by weavers who still knot every row by hand on a cotton warp and beat it down with a hand comb. A piece this size represents many months on the loom for a team of weavers, and the back shows the knotting to be even and consistent from end to end, with straight sides and a flat lie.
