6'4" x 6'7" Square Chobi Ziegler Rug | Ivory All Over Floral Field | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New
Good square rugs are genuinely difficult to source, and this one measures 6'4" x 6'7", only 3 inches off a true square, which makes it the right shape for a round table, a boxy entry or a reading corner where a rectangle always looks wrong. It is a brand new hand-knotted Chobi Ziegler piece, made in India with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, ivory throughout the field, coral red in the borders and a soft green used sparingly in the smaller flowers. It has never been on a floor, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic all over floral design rather than a central medallion, so the drawing reads evenly from any side, which matters on a square. Large serrated palmettes and broad acanthus leaves sit on a slow, open vine, with 2 pairs of coral red crescent arabesques curling toward the middle and a small pale green lozenge rosette marking the center point. Flame-topped palmettes in red and gold anchor the vertical axis above and below that center, and tiny 4 petal flowers, buds and curled tendrils fill the ground without crowding it. The main border is a red ground set with alternating cream palmettes and small rosette cartouches, framed inside by an ivory trefoil guard stripe and outside by a camel gold guard that finishes the edge. All 4 corners resolve properly, which is a fair test of the weaver's drawing on a square format.
Ivory, Coral Red and Soft Green Palette
The field is ivory with a warm honey cast that deepens toward gold where the light crosses the pile, and the close-up photographs show the subtle shift in tone that comes from hand-spun wool taking dye unevenly. Against that ground the coral red works as an outline color, drawn in thin strokes through the arabesques and flower hearts rather than as a block, so it stays bright without turning the rug into a red rug. The borders reverse the balance: there the red is the ground and the cream, camel and tan palmettes read as the pattern. A muted sage green appears in the center rosette, in the leaf tips and in a handful of small blossoms, cooling the overall warmth just enough. The result is a neutral-leaning rug in ivory, gold and brick that sits comfortably over oak, tile or stone and takes on a soft sheen from the wool.
Made in India: Weave and Quality
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and the Chobi Ziegler style is one of the things its workshops do best: hand-spun wool, softened vegetable-dye tones and the relaxed 19th century workshop drawing that collectors associate with this family of Oriental rug designs. The back photograph shows straight, even knot rows and a tight cotton foundation, with the pattern reading clearly from the reverse, which is the mark of careful weaving rather than rushed production. The pile is cut at a medium height, full enough to feel substantial underfoot while still letting the fine outlines in the arabesques stay crisp. Hand-tied ivory fringe finishes both ends and the selvedges are tight and straight, so the rug is sound for daily use in a busy room and will take decades of traffic.
