19'4" x 19'5" Chobi Peshawar Ziegler Rug | Square Oversize All Over Floral | Brand New Hand-Knotted Wool

Squares at this scale barely exist. At 19'4" x 19'5" this Chobi Peshawar covers roughly 375 square feet, enough to floor a great room, a double-height foyer or a banquet-sized dining space corner to corner, and it is as close to a perfect square as a handmade piece gets, off by a single inch across almost 20 feet. The rug is brand new and never used, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with hand-spun wool in a low 5/16" pile, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. Weight and bulk put most pieces in the oversized rugs class into freight territory elsewhere; here it ships free to all 50 states.

Design and Motifs

This is a true all over Ziegler drawing rather than a medallion layout, which is exactly what a square this size needs: the pattern reads correctly from every wall. Large lobed palmettes and round 8 petal rosettes sit on a loose diagonal lattice, connected by thin curling vine and small serrated blossoms, and at the center of each lattice compartment long feathered lancet leaves radiate outward in dark grey brown, forming the softest suggestion of a diamond without ever closing into a medallion. Scattered between them are tiny cruciform florets, hooked leaf tips and single rust colored buds that keep the open field from going flat. The main border carries alternating lotus palmettes and quatrefoil rosettes on a wheat ground, flanked by narrow guard stripes of running vine and a reciprocal saw-tooth band. All 4 corners resolve cleanly, the corner detail photograph showing the guard stripes turning without a break in the repeat, which is a marker of a properly drawn cartoon rather than an improvised one.

Cream White Field with Wheat Brown Drawing

The palette is deliberately quiet and built almost entirely from undyed and lightly dyed hand-spun wool. The ground is a cream white that drifts toward oatmeal and pale sand in broad horizontal bands of abrash, the natural variation you get when a weaver moves from one hand-spun batch to the next, and across 19 feet that shift gives the field depth instead of a printed evenness. The drawing is wheat brown: palmettes in honey and biscuit, vine work in a slightly deeper tan. Outlines and the feathered leaves are a muted sage grey that reads almost olive in daylight and nearly charcoal in the closest photographs, and a handful of rosettes are filled with a dark walnut brown that anchors the whole composition. The only warm accents are small terracotta and soft rust dots at the flower centers and leaf tips, no more than a few percent of the surface. Against a light oak or limestone floor the rug behaves like a textured neutral; against dark wood the cream field lifts the entire room.

Peshawar Weaving and the Chobi Ziegler Tradition

Chobi Peshawar rugs come from the workshops around Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan, where weavers took up the Ziegler house designs of the late 19th century, open field, soft color, restrained drawing, and paired them with hand-spun wool and vegetal dye recipes. Chobi refers to that dye tradition, and it is why the color here sits so low in saturation and will mellow rather than shift as the rug ages. This is an Oriental rug in the strict sense of the term, and the workshops making this type of weave are among the few anywhere still producing oversize hand-knotted work to consistent standards. The practical achievement is the loom: a piece 19 feet wide needs a purpose-built frame and a row of weavers working side by side for well over a year, with the cartoon read line by line so the pattern stays square across that entire span. The cotton warp and weft are firm, the 5/16" pile is clipped low so the drawing stays crisp, and the fringe and selvages are original and untouched on a rug that has never been on a floor.
