9' x 9'4" Square Chobi Peshawar Rug | Ziegler All-Over Floral Design | Hand-Knotted Wool

A true square is one of the hardest sizes to buy well, and this 9' x 9'4" Chobi Peshawar comes as close to a perfect square as a handmade piece gets. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, new and never used, with a soft beige field carrying an all-over Ziegler drawing of palmettes, rosettes and thin scrolling vine. The pile has that slightly lustrous, lightly washed handle that Chobi weavers are known for, so the surface reads calm from across the room and detailed up close. Photo 12 shows the original hand-woven tag, rug number 5283, still attached to the back, and every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field runs as a balanced all-over floral pattern, which is exactly why it works in a square room: the eye finds no single focal point fighting the walls. Large fan-shaped palmettes with serrated leaf collars anchor the 4 quadrants, heart-shaped blossoms in rust and deep red sit between them, and open rosettes float on a lattice of hair-thin vine that stays drawn rather than sketched. Small leaf sprays and tiny buds fill the ground so the beige never feels empty. The main border repeats an upright palmette alternating with a curled leaf, framed on both sides by a narrow guard band of squares and 4 petal flowerheads, and the corners resolve cleanly instead of being cut off, which tells you the weaver planned the layout to the square before the first knot.

A Beige Field Warmed by Rust, Olive and Soft Green

Beige is the main color, but it is not a flat beige. Depending on the light it shifts between sand, warm cream and pale gold, with the natural abrash of hand-spun wool giving faint horizontal movement through the open ground. Against that, the border is a deeper caramel tan with a faint rose cast, and the flowers carry rust, terracotta, burnt orange and a few deep burgundy accents that keep the palette from going sleepy. Olive and soft sage green appear in the leaves and in the small outlines around the palmette centers, brown edges the larger blossoms, and touches of gold and ivory lift the middle of each flower. It is a warm neutral rug in the truest sense: it will sit happily with oak, walnut, linen, leather and off-white walls without competing with any of them.

Chobi Peshawar Weaving in Pakistan

Peshawar in northern Pakistan is where the Chobi tradition has been refined over the last several decades, and the best workshops there now produce some of the most consistent hand-knotted work available anywhere. Chobi means wood, a reference to the muted plant-based color tradition these pieces are built on, and the Ziegler drawing they use comes out of the classic 19th century commercial weaving revival that first made this open, airy floral layout popular with Western buyers. The knotting here is even and tight for a village-format weave, the pile is a good medium height with plenty of wool left on the rug, the selvedges are hand-wrapped and the fringe is the warp of the rug itself rather than an applied addition.
